For the month of April we had 156 calls, and our ambulances have been turned into mobile bug bars due to bug season, and now that May is here, warmer days and even more squashed bugs are on the way.
Here are some tips, tricks, and pointers for the warmer months that we hope show up soon!
Stay hydrated—drink water regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty
Avoid strenuous activity during peak heat hours (usually 10 AM–4 PM)
Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and sunscreen
Take frequent breaks in shaded or cool areas
Never leave children or pets in parked vehicles—even for a short time
Know the signs of heat-related illness (dizziness, nausea, confusion, excessive sweating or lack of sweating)
Check on elderly neighbors and those with medical conditions
Use caution when swimming—never swim alone and supervise children closely
Wear helmets and protective gear during outdoor activities like biking or sports
Be mindful of ticks and insects—use repellent and check for bites after outdoor time
Stay aware of weather conditions and be prepared for sudden storms
Keep a basic first aid kit available during outings
