In the final days of session I worked hard to get this bill called for a vote in the House. This bill has been floating around for decades, and I’m glad we finally got it done. Many felt this was a pointless bill or some sort of joke. Once people are educated around the environmental and societal damage released balloons pose, it becomes clear it’s anything but.
Intentionally releasing balloons will now be illegal in this state! The current law allows for the release of 10 per day. Retailers will now be able to post that intentional release of balloons is illegal and will be mandated to sell balloons with a weight at the end of the string.
Every year many birds including eagles and hawks get tangled in balloon string, often killing the birds. “Christine Cummings, a wildlife rehabilitator with A Place Called Hope in Killingworth, said she encounters many instances of large birds that get entangled in balloon strings, particularly around graduation season.”
Balloons are a major hazard to sea life, including seat turtles which eat the balloons mistaking them for jelly fish. “Overall, it’s going to be a huge improvement on the number of balloons I see floating out on [Long Island] Sound,” said Bill Lucey, of the environmental nonprofit Save the Sound.
The recent Highway 82 Fire in Georgia destroyed 130 structures and burned 23,000 acres from a fire caused by a Mylar balloon hitting a power line. Mylar balloons are conductive and it is not uncommon for them to cause power outages and wild fires when they touch power lines.
I’m glad I was able to finally get this common sense anti littering bill over the finish line after so many year.
