I have worked in or around the construction industry my entire adult life. I’ve been a laborer, equipment operator, assistant land surveyor and now professional engineer. I know first hand how hard people in the trades work, and how critical their role is in our society. I also know how much trades unions improve workers lives, myself being a proud member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. That’s why earning the endorsement of the Connecticut State Building Trades means so much to me.

I am honored to once again receive the Middletown (CT) Democrats party endorsement to be their nominee for State Rep in the 33rd district. I am grateful for the support and trust that has been placed in me over the past 6 years, and look forward to continuing to serve our community and fighting for the working people of Connecticut.

I am also excited that Kai Nikki Belton was also endorsed for the 100th House District, and look forward to working with her for another term!

In the final days of session I worked hard to get this bill called for a vote in the House. This bill has been floating around for decades, and I’m glad we finally got it done. Many felt this was a pointless bill or some sort of joke. Once people are educated around the environmental and societal damage released balloons pose, it becomes clear it’s anything but.

Intentionally releasing balloons will now be illegal in this state! The current law allows for the release of 10 per day. Retailers will now be able to post that intentional release of balloons is illegal and will be mandated to sell balloons with a weight at the end of the string.

Every year many birds including eagles and hawks get tangled in balloon string, often killing the birds. “Christine Cummings, a wildlife rehabilitator with A Place Called Hope in Killingworth, said she encounters many instances of large birds that get entangled in balloon strings, particularly around graduation season.”

Balloons are a major hazard to sea life, including seat turtles which eat the balloons mistaking them for jelly fish. “Overall, it’s going to be a huge improvement on the number of balloons I see floating out on [Long Island] Sound,” said Bill Lucey, of the environmental nonprofit Save the Sound.

The recent Highway 82 Fire in Georgia destroyed 130 structures and burned 23,000 acres from a fire caused by a Mylar balloon hitting a power line. Mylar balloons are conductive and it is not uncommon for them to cause power outages and wild fires when they touch power lines.

I’m glad I was able to finally get this common sense anti littering bill over the finish line after so many year.

Connecticut is not going to let the Federal Government trample on our residents civil and constitutional rights. Earlier this week Governor Ned Lamont signed SB397 into law. This wide ranging law will protect our residents and their civil rights while demanding basic identification and accountability from all state and local officials. This law:

Creates a private right of action in state court to sue federal, state, and local government actors when constitutional rights are violated.

Clarifies the requirement that the Inspector General (IG) investigate and prosecute state, local, and some federal agents for the unauthorized use of deadly force, and expands it to include all federal law enforcement agents. Gives the IG clear unrestricted access to a crime scene when law enforcement uses deadly force, or when a person dies from the use of force.

Prohibits all law enforcement officers—federal, state, local—from covering their faces, albeit with some exceptions, and requires officers to wear identification badges.

Prohibits a federal law enforcement official from being hired as a police officer in CT if the official was dismissed for malfeasance or serious misconduct, or resigned while under investigation for such action.

Speak thanks to State Representative Steve Stafstrom and Senator Gary Winfield for writing and advancing this bill.

The State of CT has to responsibility to protect our residents and push back on the blatantly unconstitutional actions of the Federal government.
