I discussed a bill on this final day of session that prohibits residential rental agreements from requiring that tenants pay for utilities if there is no separate meter used to measure utilities delivered exclusively to their dwelling unit. This bill is just another way to ultimately make Connecticut less affordable.

Today is the final day is the 2026 General Assembly session. We gavel out at the stroke of midnight, Sine Die. That’s Latin for 'without any future date' signifying the final adjournment of a session. You can follow the debate today at CT-N.com.

I'm at the Capitol today voting on bills, but back home residents in both Monroe and Easton are voting today in budget referendums. This is your chance to have a say in the tax and spending plans for our towns. Monroe residents can vote until 8pm at 709 Monroe Turnpike and Easton is voting at Samuel Staples Elementary.

Before session today, I stopped by Monroe Elementary School for the district's annual Celebration of Reading event. I met with 5th graders in Mr. Rinn's class and read Revolutionary Mary by Karen Blumenthal and Jen McCarthy. The theme for the books selected this year was our nation’s 250th birthday. We spoke about this important time in our history during my visit. Thank you to the staff who organize the event each year, which this year falls during Teacher Appreciation Week!

The House was in session late last night to vote on a budget adjustment bill. I ultimately supported the plan because Monroe, Easton, and Trumbull will receive additional funding, which the towns can use for tax relief to help offset rising education costs. I was disappointed though that the cities got more than their fair share. Bridgeport, for example, was handed $25 million. Our towns are feeling the budget squeeze just as much as the cities.

There was bipartisan opposition to a bill voted on in the House yesterday that changes the intent of HB 8002 (passed in the Nov. Special Session). This new bill, HB 5362, would require municipalities to allow transit community middle housing AND mixed use development in any commercially zoned lot, subject only to summary review. 8002 said OR.

The House voted on a bill yesterday that would start looking at possible reforms to the 8-30g process. This task force would look at the denominator of units that towns need to meet the threshold for affordable housing moratorium, and the length of time for a unit to be designated as affordable.
