Reduce The Trash CT

Reduce The Trash CT Reduce The Trash CT is a statewide initiative to address Connecticut’s waste crisis.

With the closing of the Hartford waste-to-energy plant, there’s simply too much trash and no more room. If nothing is done, around 850,000 tons of trash will need to be shipped out of state annually, causing disposal costs to rise by as much as 60%. The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Agency is offering nearly $5 million in grants to cities and towns for the implement

ation of trash reduction pilot programs that have residents separate their food scraps from their nonrecyclable trash. Food scraps can account for 20% or more of trash – separating allows them to be used for composting or turned into renewable energy through anaerobic digestion.
