Elizabeth C**t and a couple of friends founded the CT chapter of the National Society of Colonial Dames at her house 138 years ago today. An excellent example of the ongoing impact of her civic engagement and philanthropy, the society remains a significant force in historic preservation.

Among the many hereditary societies that formed in the later decades of the 19th century, the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America (NSCDA), founded in 1892, distinguishes itself…

Big day in C**t history. Thanks to Lynn Ferrari for collecting this information.

ON THIS DATE (10/17) IN HARTFORD HISTORY:

1902 - Mrs. Elizabeth C**t has given instructions that her son's yacht, the Dauntless, which has laid at Essex since Commodore Caldwell C**t died in 1894, be converted into a houseboat. The old yacht, which has had a remarkable history, has been taken to Isham's shipyard in Clinton to be remoldeled. Her hull will not be changed, but her masts will be taken out and a superstructure built on the main deck, which will be adapted to the purpose for which Mrs. C**t intends the yacht to be used hereafter. The celebrated schooner yacht Dauntless was built and launched at Mystic about the year 1868. At that time her name was L'Hirondelle. Soon after the yacht came into the possession of James Gordon Bennett, who lengthened it to about 130 feet over all and rebuilt and rechristened it the Dauntless. In the early 80s it was bought by Commodore C**t.

1956 - C**t Arms Museum closes its doors at the Armory, Historical weapons and data moved to State Library.

Caldwell must have been a disappointment to his mother, but she loved him anyway and built our parish house in his memory.

Notable of the Month - Caldwell C**t (1858-1894)
Caldwell C**t was the son of gun manufacturer Sam and his wife Elizabeth C**t. Educated at Yale, Caldwell designed his first firearm in 1879. He was elected vice president of C**t’s Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Company in 1888 at the age of 29. There is little information regarding his active participation in the business.

Caldwell was most interested in sailing. Since he received his inheritance at 21, he was able to pursue his hobby without financial concerns.

Caldwell’s interest in yachting began in 1868 at age 10 in Newport. He acquired his first yacht at 18 and eventually owned 5 yachts. In 1881, he purchased the Dauntless, a champion racer. He averaged 10 months a year sailing. He toured Europe and the West Indies and regularly visited Florida where he was a member of the St. Augustine Yacht Club.

In 1887, Caldwell took part in a transatlantic race between the Dauntless and the Coronet. He crossed the Atlantic in 16 days, arriving 30 hours behind the Coronet. Although he lost, the race made him a yachting legend. In 1888, he was made vice-commodore of the prestigious New York Yacht Club and in 1892, he was made commodore of the Larchmont Yacht Club.

Caldwell died in Punta Gorda, Florida in January of 1894.
