🚨 SCAM ALERT – PLEASE SHARE 🚨

The Hartford Police Department wants to make citizens aware of a scam that is actively circulating and has recently affected someone in our area.

Scammers are calling people while posing as an FBI agent, Inspector General, or other government official and claiming that your Social Security number or financial information has been linked to money laundering or another criminal investigation. They often sound convincing and may try to scare or pressure you into acting quickly.

Recently, Hartford Police Department dealt with a situation where a victim was instructed to go to Dollar General, purchase gift cards, and read the numbers off the back over the phone.

⚠️ PLEASE REMEMBER:
No legitimate government agency—including the FBI, Social Security Administration, or Inspector General—will EVER tell you to buy gift cards or provide gift card numbers as payment or to “secure” your money.

Scammers rely on fear, urgency, and confusion to take advantage of good people.

📱 Also be aware:
Scammers have the capability to “spoof” phone numbers, meaning a call may appear on your caller ID as a local number or even resemble a legitimate agency or business. Do not assume a caller is legitimate simply because the number looks local or familiar. Be cautious and mindful of who you are speaking with before providing any information.

📬 Another important reminder:
If a legitimate government agency is investigating something that pertains to you, there will almost always be official notification through the mail or direct contact in person by a law enforcement officer or government representative with proper identification and credentials. Legitimate agencies do not typically demand immediate action, secrecy, or payment over the phone.

✅ Hartford Police Department’s advice:
• Never purchase gift cards for someone demanding payment over the phone
• Never read gift card numbers or PINs to strangers
• Be cautious of callers claiming you are under investigation or that your money is at risk
• Do not trust caller ID alone
• Buy gift cards only for loved ones and give them in person
• Verify suspicious claims before taking any action

If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and verify before acting. You can always come to the Hartford Police Department and speak with an officer in person if you would like to confirm the legitimacy of a suspicious phone call.

If you think you may be dealing with a scam or have questions, contact the Hartford Police Department at (334) 588-3369 or dispatch/non-emergency at (334) 588-2222.

When in doubt—hang up, call us, and let us help.

National Police Week is a time to honor and remember the brave law enforcement officers across our nation who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. This week serves as a solemn reminder that behind every badge is a person willing to put their life on the line to protect others, and we will never forget those who gave everything in service to their communities.

The Hartford Police Department would also like to express our appreciation for all law enforcement officers currently serving, especially the dedicated men who proudly serve the fine City of Hartford each and every day. Their commitment, professionalism, and willingness to answer the call at all hours does not go unnoticed.

To the families of fallen officers: we remember your sacrifice and stand with you.

To our officers still serving: thank you for your continued dedication to protecting and serving our community.

If you see a police officer this week, take a moment to thank them for what they do, and also take a moment to remember those who are no longer with us.

🚨 SCAM ALERT – FAKE COURT NOTICE TEXTS 🚨

The Hartford Police Department has been made aware of scam text messages circulating that claim to be from an Alabama court regarding unpaid traffic violations.

These messages often include:

* Threatening language such as “Final Enforcement Notice” or “Active Enforcement Status”
* Claims that your license will be suspended or legal action will be taken
* A QR code or link demanding immediate payment

⚠️ THIS IS A SCAM.

Courts in Alabama do NOT send enforcement notices via random text messages, and they will never request payment through a QR code sent to your phone.

âś… What you should do:

* Do NOT click any links or scan any QR codes
* Do NOT send money or provide personal information
* Delete the message and block the number

If you are ever unsure about a court-related matter, contact the court directly using an official phone number—not one provided in a text message.

If you have questions or believe you may have been targeted by this scam, please contact the Hartford Police Department at (334) 588-3369.

Please share this post to help protect others in our community.

🚨 SCAM ALERT – PLEASE READ & SHARE 🚨

The Hartford Police Department has been made aware of a text message scam circulating in our area involving a fake “final notice” for traffic violations.

These messages may appear official and even include a seal or QR code—but DO NOT be fooled. This is a scam.

⚠️ Here’s how you can tell:

* The notice references “St. Louis County, Alabama” — there is NO such county in Alabama
* It urges immediate payment or action
* It includes a QR code or link for you to scan or click
* It may come from a random or unfamiliar phone number

đźš« DO NOT:

* Click any links
* Scan any QR codes
* Provide personal or financial information

âś… DO:

* Delete the message immediately
* Report it as spam on your phone
* Contact your local law enforcement agency if you’re unsure

Government agencies will not contact you by random text messages demanding payment or directing you to scan codes.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Hartford Police Department at (334) 588-3369.

Help us spread the word and protect others in our community!

This week, April 12–18, we recognize National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, a time dedicated to honoring the men and women behind the headset who serve as our first, first responders.

Every call for help starts with a voice on the other end of the line, and here in Hartford, that voice is 34 Central.

Our dispatchers handle countless calls, often in high-stress situations, providing calm, clear direction when people need it most. This week has been especially busy, and their dedication has not gone unnoticed.

It’s a job that often goes thankless, but it shouldn’t.

From all of us at the Hartford Police Department, thank you for your professionalism, your patience, and your commitment to keeping our officers and our community safe. We couldn’t do this job without you
