The new Eagles Journalism course led by Elizabeth Rowe have completed their first round of interviews. Students in the class worked in pairs to interview new staff members in preparation for their selection as the weekly "Staff Spotlight". This activity helped the students get into the groove of future assignments in the course and will help them gradually improve with future responsibilities in the class. They spent time learning proper interview techniques before meeting with the teachers. Students learned how to ask questions, use good body language, take notes during the interviews, and did a few practice interviews with each other so they could get authentic experience. These exercises helped them become more comfortable with each other and with the activity itself.

La Historia De Mi Vida

Mrs. Embry’s Heritage Speaking class did a project called “La Historia De Mi Vida”, which means “The Story Of My Life”. Her students were expected to make a timeline or roadmap of their lives with drawings of important events and anything that represented them. They had 4 days to complete them, and on the day they finished, they had 2 minutes to introduce themselves and present to other classmates individually. This was a creative, key project for their identity unit, “La identidad,” and Mrs. Embry says it is a great opener for Hispanic Heritage Month. She also stated that her students weren’t exactly excited to speak to one another individually, but at the end of it they were laughing and having fun getting to learn about one another in a way they hadn’t before. Mrs. Embry said, “My students did fantastic, and I am so proud of how they all were willing and able to participate!” It seems like this project went very well for all of them and we hope to see some more fun projects that add to students' learning!

Assisted Living Meal

On Monday, September 14, 2026, students from OCHS went to Dogwood Retreat Assisted Living Home and shared a meal with the residents. An assisted living home is a place for older adults who need a little help with daily tasks such as cooking meals. This collaboration was led by activity director Ms. Denise LeBaron, who goes there 5 days a week. As activity director, she leads them in playing games, watching movies, and going on trips with them, such as Trunnel’s Farm and Central City for a music festival.

Students were chosen because they had been writing to the residents for a few years. For the delicious and joyous meal, they had pizza, homemade ice cream, and brownies. During the meal, the students discussed fashion, motorcycles, cars, and got to know the residents. Ms. LeBaron herself said, “I encourage clubs to come and spend some time with them. These residents will make your day.”

KVCA All State Watchlist

Five members of the Ohio County High School Volleyball team were nominated to the Kentucky Volleyball Coaches Association (KVCA) All State watchlist. Volleyball coaches nominate up to 5 players within their region to the watchlist. If a player is chosen for the KVCA All State team, they will receive state-wide media recognition and be honored alongside other top players. The OCHS players that were nominated this year are seniors Emma Coppage, Haleigh Flener and Maeli Givens; junior Mikiyleigh Hall; and freshman Mia Freels. Previously, OCHS player Kate Hoskins was named the 3rd Region Player of the Year in 2025.

Hands-On Labs

Earlier this year Mrs.Cornell’s biology and Accelerated ICP class got to do hands-on labs discovering a new perspective on the world around them, and how important accurate measurements are for the future.

The biology class got to practice using real microscopes learning how to adjust magnification as well as viewing specimens up close and making educated guesses on what they are. By doing this students are learning how it feels to properly use a microscope and solve problems on their own compared to just memorizing steps on paper.

The accelerated ICP class used measuring skills to make observations as well as making accurate measurements. By doing this hands-on lab students learned the importance of accurate measurements and how small inaccurate measurements can severely affect a lab. Doing this hands-on lets them learn how to make proper measurements and how to use their equipment properly.

Both of these labs show how important it is to know how to use equipment properly and how to problem solve using what they know. It also will help them in the future by using this lab as a foundation for what they know to help them learn new equipment and make observations in the future.

Staff Spotlight: Dylan Harrison

This week's OCHS Staff Spotlight is Dylan Harrison. This is his first year as our band director and pop culture teacher. Before moving to Ohio County, he lived in Russell Springs, Kentucky. He was the band director at LaRue County Middle School for three years. He attended college at Lindsay Wilson University in Columbia, Kentucky.

Dylan Harrison came to Ohio County after hearing about the position from people that he worked with. He says that he has known that he wanted to be a teacher since the 6th grade. In high school, he had the opportunity to work with students and help them with All District. He stated that, “Through that experience, I found that I had a lot of patience. I liked seeing things get better. I liked connecting with people, and I get to do all of that every day.”

Mr. Harrison said that his favorite part of teaching band is the students and that there is never a dull moment. He recalled a moment from a recent show when the students came off the field super excited. While he values success, he says that the “number one thing for me is definitely student experience.”

Mr. Harrison’s interest in pop culture is also connected to his passion for music. He says that he really enjoys the history aspect of his pop culture class and that they get to dive into why things are a certain way. He gets to teach the history and “why” behind movies, TV, and the music of those time periods.

The last thing Mr. Harrison said is that he wants people to come and see the band's performances. The band will be performing at home football games and various performances across the state. We are happy to have Mr. Harrison here at OCHS and we can’t wait to see what he brings to the band.
