Today is Loving Day, the anniversary of Loving v. Virginia (1967), when the Supreme Court struck down all state laws banning in*******al marriage. Chief Justice Earl Warren wrote: “The freedom to marry has long been recognized as one of the vital personal rights essential to the orderly pursuit of happiness… the freedom to marry, or not marry, a person of another race resides with the individual, and cannot be infringed by the State.”

Richard Loving himself put it even more simply. He sent a message to the Supreme Court: “Tell the Court I love my wife, and it is just unfair that I can’t live with her in Virginia.”

Loving v. Virginia set the precedent for Obergefell v. Hodges and the right of all people to marry the person they love. I’m proud to stand with everyone celebrating this decision today, and to recognize the work of the Loving Day Project, whose mission is to fight racism through education, create visibility, and build community. More than 40 Bridgeport families had their entire monthly SNAP benefits stolen within minutes of receiving them. One resident lost her full $248 food budget in an instant.

This is not acceptable. I am pushing alongside U.S. Senator Blumenthal for upgraded security technology to protect these benefits. Bridgeport families are entitled to this money and the state needs to do more. What a wonderful town hall at 3030 Park with Rep. Cristin McCarthy Vahey! Residents brought such thoughtful questions on ECS funding, gender-affirming care, protecting gay marriage, and restricting private equity ownership of hospitals and nursing homes. And a standout moment: our seniors sparked a robust conversation on AI. Like all of us, they are eager to engage with this emerging technology, and that curiosity is exactly what we need. Free AI literacy classes are available through Charter Oak Academy for all CT residents!

This month, we celebrate every person who had the courage to live honestly, fully, in their own skin, in a world that punished them for it. We honor those who fought, those who marched, and those who simply refused to disappear. And we stand beside everyone still on that journey. Love is not a phase. Identity is not a debate. Happy Pride! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

🎭 It’s official! The State Bond Commission has approved $246,000 for Bridgeport’s Klein Memorial Auditorium. This funding will complete construction of new office space, a conference room, and an elevator connecting the ground floor to the mezzanine, making the Klein fully accessible for everyone in our community. Grateful to Governor Lamont and the Commission for this investment in Bridgeport!

This week, I had the honor of judging the final round of the Debate League at Vazzy’s. The students tackled a question at the heart of economic justice: minimum wage versus a living wage. Their arguments were brilliant, researched, and passionate. The next generation of lawyers, lawmakers, and advocates is alive and well in Bridgeport.

It was a pleasure to sit in as a student in a civics class at IBEW Local 488 with former Bridgeport Mayor and former State Senator Bill Finch, who turns out to be an outstanding teacher too! There is something special about a room full of people coming together to learn how our democracy works and why it matters.

Thank you to my friend and colleague for coordinating and for the lovely introduction, and to the League of Women Voters and the Wilton Historical Society for hosting! Conversations about our Constitution and what it means for our democracy today are more important than ever, and I am so glad everyone braved the rain to be part of this one.

On our most solemn day dedicated to the memory of our fallen heroes, we remember those who served by honoring the freedom we have today. It was an honor to attend the Memorial Day ceremony in Trumbull, led by Veteran and Town Leader Dan Sacco and First Selectman Vicki Tesoro. Grand Marshall Lieutenant Susan Stuban Monks spoke of the importance of all sectors of the armed forces, including the United States Naval Reserves and the Merchant Marines. And thank you to Madison Middle School student Maddie for creating this year’s theme: “Their Sacrifice Lives in Our Freedom.” Both Maddie and Lt. Monks will be marching in the parade next year (when we hope the weather permits the parade to go on).
