Here in Connecticut, we know that compassionate, human-centered, trans-affirming mental health services are vital to our community. Yet, LGBTQ+ folks in our state are at a greater risk of experiencing suicidal ideation, mental health disparity, and involuntary commitment.

We’re proud to support , calling for peer respite centers around the state, including centers specifically dedicated to serving trans and nonbinary folks.

If you have a story to share about your lived experience related to the mental health system here in Connecticut, and want to speak in support of bringing peer respite programs to our state, reach out to [email protected] ❤️

Last night we gathered in community to honor the life and legacy of Nex Benedict. Nex deserved to trans joy, power, and a beautiful future. We will fight for that future in their honor and in their memory, for all nonbinary and transgender young people in Connecticut and around the country.

Thank you to Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont, State Representative Sarah Keitt, and State Representative Dominique Johnson for holding this space for us.

Trans kids belong in Connecticut. Trans kids belong everywhere.

We join our q***r and transgender community in collective outrage over the preventable, hate-motivated murder of 16-year-old Indigenous, nonbinary student Nex Benedict.

Before their death, Nex’s Oklahoma high school banned transgender students from using the restroom. As a result, Nex spent the final moments of their short life being tortured and assaulted in the place that the government weaponized against them: the bathroom.

As we mourn the tragic loss of Nex Benedict, we honor their life and legacy by demanding immediate action for the protection and safety of transgender and nonbinary youth.

We believe that every school in Connecticut (and around the country) should welcome and affirm LGBTQIA+ students—and that educators should have the tools and resources they need to champion that support. This is not only necessary—it’s lifesaving.

If resources like this existed in Oklahoma public schools, Nex would still be here.

That’s why we are working with a coalition of parents, educators, and advocates to develop tools to assess the safety of Connecticut schools for LGBTQIA+ youth.

It’s time for Connecticut to step up its assistance to school districts doing their best for q***r and trans youth and resource the training and technical support needed for districts that are falling short.

Trans kids deserve to feel safe in school. Trans kids deserve to feel safe in Connecticut.

This past November, The City Council of Hartford made history in an overwhelming vote to approve the placement of the Connecticut AIDS Memorial on the Columbus Greens this historic move will permanently memorialize those we have lost to HIV/AIDS and serve as a reminder that the HIV epidemic is not over.

“Today in Connecticut, Black people, q***r and trans people, and women continue to bear an outsized burden of HIV infections and death from AIDS-related complications. How a society cares for its most vulnerable during a public health crisis reflects its values. Frankly, we can do better.”
