We've heard questions from tenants and housing providers following recent federal announcements about emotional support animals. Here's the key takeaway:

Connecticut and federal fair housing laws have not changed.

People with disabilities may still have the right to request an assistance animal. including an emotional support animal, as a reasonable accommodation in housing, even when a property has a "no pets" policy.

Our newest Know Your Rights flyer explains:
• What qualifies as an assistance animal
• How to request a reasonable accommodation
• When documentation may be required
• Why online "certifications" are not required under the law
• What to do if your request is denied

It also includes a link to our Disability Letter Generator to help tenants make accommodation requests.

Please share this resource to help spread accurate information about fair housing rights.

June is Pride Month 🏳️‍🌈

Everyone deserves a safe place to call home, free from discrimination.

Fair housing laws protect individuals from discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, including here in Connecticut. But barriers still exist, and too many LGBTQ+ individuals continue to face challenges when seeking housing.

This month and every month, we’re committed to advancing fair housing for all.

Need to request a change from your landlord but not sure how to ask?

If you need a reasonable accommodation or modification, putting it in writing is an important step, but it can be hard to know where to start.

We created a tool to help you draft a clear, effective letter:

It walks you through the process step-by-step.

Our partners at the Connecticut Tenants Union and the Partnership for Strong Communities are hosting an upcoming iForum on tenant organizing in Connecticut and its ongoing impact on housing policy, advocacy, and community stability across the state.

Hear directly from tenant leaders and advocates about:
• The history of tenant organizing in Connecticut
• How the Connecticut Tenants Union is organizing today
• Ways to get involved in tenant-led advocacy

The event is open to tenants, policymakers, advocates, and community partners, and a light breakfast will be provided.

We encourage anyone interested in housing justice and tenant advocacy to attend!
