Did you know one of the most famous authors in American history once called Connecticut home? 📚
In 1874, Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) moved into a Gothic Victorian mansion in Hartford with his wife Olivia and their children. The family lived there for 17 years, and Twain later described them as the happiest years of his life. It was inside this house that he wrote some of his most iconic novels, including Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Hartford was one of the country’s cultural and publishing hubs, making it the perfect place for Twain’s creativity and career to thrive.
Today, the Mark Twain House still stands as one of Connecticut’s most important historic landmarks and a reminder that some of the most influential stories in American literature were written right here in Hartford.
Connecticut Open House Day is coming up on June 13th, and the museum is offering special admission deals and programming throughout the weekend, along with many others across our state.
