Mike opens up about how his need to be liked and accepted became part of his addiction long before drugs entered the picture.

He reflects on people-pleasing, ego, pride, and the painful moment of realizing he no longer recognized himself. For Mike, recovery meant learning to stop living through other people’s perceptions and begin facing the person in the mirror.

This conversation is a reminder that addiction is not always just about substances. Sometimes, it starts with the stories we tell ourselves, the masks we wear, and the value we struggle to see within ourselves.

Mike shares a powerful perspective on addiction and recovery: the same qualities that kept people going during active addiction — grit, determination, critical thinking, courage, and motivation — can also become the tools that help build recovery.

He explains that recovery is not always about feeling motivated. Sometimes it is about discipline, consistency, and learning how to use the strength that was already there in a new direction.

Recovery does not always have to be “given” to someone. Sometimes, it needs to be brought out.

Today we took a little time to celebrate the people behind the work. Recovery is built on connection, and we’re grateful for a team that shows up every day to support individuals, families, and communities across Connecticut.

Thanks to everyone who made our staff picnic a great day!
