Before buying a smoke alarm, carbon monoxide alarm, or fire extinguisher, take a moment to check the label. 🔍🔥

The Connecticut State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection are warning residents about non-listed fire safety products being sold online and in stores. These products may not be tested to nationally recognized safety standards and may not work when you need them most.

When shopping for fire safety devices, look for the listing mark from a nationally recognized testing laboratory such as UL, ETL, or FM on the packaging and the device itself.

Residents should also check the devices already in their homes. If a smoke alarm, CO alarm, or fire extinguisher does not have a recognized listing mark, it should be replaced.

If you see a suspicious product, report it to the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection: ct.gov/dcp/complaint

❄️ Winter storm coming: Stay fire safe ❄️

As temperatures drop and snow accumulates, the risk of home fires and carbon monoxide poisoning increases. Most winter storm emergencies are preventable.

🔥 Heat Safely
• Keep space heaters at least 3 feet from anything that can burn.
• Plug heaters directly into the wall; no extension cords.
• Turn heaters off when you leave or go to sleep.
• Put fireplace ashes in a metal container with a lid and store it outside, away from your home.

⚡ Generator Safety
• Never run generators inside your home or garage.
• Keep them at least 20 feet from your home, exhaust pointed away.
• Never use your oven or grill to heat your home.
• Use flashlights instead of candles.

🚨 Check Your Alarms
• Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
• Replace batteries if needed.
• If an alarm sounds, get outside and call 9-1-1.

🏠 Keep Paths Clear
• Clear vents, exits, and hydrants of snow.
• Make sure your address is visible.
• Check on your neighbors.

Prepare now. Heat safely. Test your alarms.

🔥 Cold weather means more fireplaces... and a higher risk of fires caused by improper ash disposal.

Across Connecticut, several recent fires have started because ashes that looked cool were actually still smoldering.

Protect your home and your family by following these simple steps:
✔️ Let ashes cool for several days
✔️ Use a metal container with a tight-fitting lid
✔️ Store the container outside, away from buildings and decks

Even one hidden ember can start a fire. Stay warm and stay safe this holiday season.

In the wake of several recent fires that have resulted in tragedy across Connecticut, State Fire Marshal Lauri Volkert spoke with Kevin Gaiss of NBC Connecticut about how to keep yourself and your family safe.

✅ Check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors — make sure they’re up to date and working properly.
🚪 Have a home fire escape plan — include two ways out of every room, and practice it with everyone in your household.
💡 Keep heating equipment and space heaters far away from anything that can burn, and never leave them unattended.

Taking a few minutes today to prepare can save lives tomorrow.
