This morning Channing VFD, Hartley VFD and Dalhart VFD responded to a grass fire west of Channing. The fire had been burning since the storm last night. We believe it started from a lightning strike and due to the remote and rough terrain it was not spotted until late morning. Thank you to Flying W Aviation and Clay Waldrip for saving us from having to hike into this on foot.

It’s officially the FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL at Hartley Independent School District and Hartley Fire & EMS is excited to welcome our students, teachers, staff, and families back for another great school year!

This morning, Hartley Fire & EMS & Hartley County Sheriff’s Office, and our four-legged friend Arlo were proud to help welcome students back to campus!🐾🚒🚓

We’re wishing every student a safe, successful, and FUN school year! Remember to slow down in school zones, watch for children and buses, and always stay alert around school traffic! 💚🐅

🚨 XIT Rodeo & Reunion Public Safety Notice 🚨

As you enjoy this year’s XIT Rodeo & Reunion festivities, Hartley County Emergency Management would like to remind everyone to help us keep the community safe.

🔥 Fire Line – John Todd Road / Lake Area
A marked fire line has been established around the lake area on John Todd Road. Please do not park, or cross into these marked areas. These measures are in place to help allow emergency personnel access if needed.

🚷Please slow down and be attentive of pedestrians walking & volunteers conducting traffic control.

🚓 Parking Enforcement
Vehicles parked illegally, blocking roadways, fire lanes, gates, or emergency access points will be towed. Law enforcement agencies will be actively enforcing parking regulations throughout the event.

☀️ Heat Safety
Temperatures will be high during the festivities.
• Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
• Take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning.
• Wear lightweight clothing and sunscreen.
• Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle.

🚗 Drive Responsibly
If you’re celebrating, please make a plan before you go.
• Don’t drink and drive.
• Designate a sober driver or use a safe ride home.
• Stay alert for pedestrians and increased traffic throughout the event.

The Romero Grass Fire, located at Highway 54 West and FM 3296 on the north side of the railroad tracks, is contained and extinguished at this time.

The fire burned approximately 50 acres. Crews will continue to monitor the area, as some trees and heavy vegetation are expected to smolder for some time.

Responding agencies included:

* Channing Volunteer Fire Department
* Nara Visa Fire Department
* Hartley County Emergency Management
* Hartley County Sheriff’s Office
