Dinosaur-Themed Summer Reading Program Draws Big Crowd at Local Library

Young readers and aspiring paleontologists filled the library this week for a dinosaur-themed Summer Reading Program event that combined storytelling, hands-on learning and outdoor adventure.

Participants gathered to hear If You Happen to Have a Dinosaur by author Linda Bailey before heading outside for a dinosaur bone dig activity. Children searched through sand for hidden prehistoric treasures, giving them a chance to experience the excitement of a real archaeological discovery.

Library officials reported a strong turnout, with approximately 100 children and 50 adults attending the program.

The event is part of the library’s ongoing Summer Reading Program, themed “Unearth a Story,” which encourages children and families to explore reading through interactive activities and educational experiences.

Organizers said they were thrilled by the community response and the opportunity to bring families together through books, creativity and hands-on learning.

“We love seeing our community come together to learn, play and discover new stories,” library staff shared following the event.

The dinosaur-themed activities will continue next week as the Summer Reading Program returns for another installment of “Unearth a Story.” Library officials are encouraging families to attend and take part in more reading adventures throughout the summer.

The Summer Reading Program is designed to promote literacy, encourage lifelong learning and provide engaging activities for children during the summer months.

Hartselle Man Charged Following Incident at Local Business

A Hartselle man has been arrested following an investigation into an incident at a local business that left one employee injured and caused significant property damage.

According to the Hartselle Police Department, 35-year-old Kendell Montez Turney of Hartselle was arrested on June 11, 2026, and charged with Assault in the Second Degree.

The charge stems from an incident that occurred on June 10 at a business in Hartselle. Investigators say Turney arrived at the business to retrieve a vehicle from impound and became involved in a dispute regarding the impound process.

Authorities allege that during the dispute, Turney entered his vehicle and attempted to leave the property. As employees tried to prevent him from exiting through a secured gate, Turney allegedly drove through the gate, striking an employee and causing injuries. Police said the vehicle also caused significant damage to the business's gate.

The Hartselle Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division responded to the scene and launched an investigation. Investigator Britt Parker served as the lead investigator, conducting witness interviews, gathering evidence, and reviewing the case.

Based on the investigation, Parker developed probable cause and obtained an arrest warrant charging Turney with Assault in the Second Degree.

On June 11, patrol officers located Turney and took him into custody without incident. He was transported to the Hartselle Police Department for questioning before being booked into the Morgan County Jail. Jail records indicate his bond was set at $2,500.

As with all criminal cases, the charge against Turney is an allegation, and he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

A downtown Hartselle dessert shop with roots in a Hawaiian vacation has received one of Alabama’s top honors for 2026.

Oliwia’s Shave Ice & Ice Cream was recently named the statewide winner in the Ice Cream Parlor category of the 2026 Best of Alabama Awards, an annual recognition program hosted by Guide to Alabama.

Located in the heart of downtown Hartselle on Railroad Street, the locally owned shop has become a favorite destination for its Hawaiian-inspired shave ice creations and homemade ice cream. Popular menu items feature finely shaved ice layered over ice cream and topped with sweetened condensed milk, along with a variety of handcrafted flavors made fresh by the business.

Owner Olivia Littrell Studdard said the award reflects the strong support the shop has received from customers throughout the community.

“I’m truly honored by this recognition and thankful for everyone who has supported us along the way,” Studdard said.

Studdard opened the business in 2019 after a trip to Hawaii sparked the idea of bringing the island-style treat to her hometown. Starting the venture at just 20 years old, she has steadily expanded the menu and now produces many of the shop’s ice cream offerings in-house.

Guests can enjoy a rotating lineup of specialty flavors, including favorites such as Strawberry Pretzel Salad and Ooey Gooey Butter Cake, in addition to the shop’s signature shave ice selections.

Over the years, Oliwia’s has earned a devoted customer base by offering a distinctive dessert experience, homemade treats, and a welcoming atmosphere for families and visitors alike.

The Best of Alabama Awards spotlight outstanding businesses from across the state, with winners determined through public participation and voting.

Oliwia’s Shave Ice & Ice Cream is located at 115 Railroad Street SW in downtown Hartselle. The shop is open Monday through Saturday from noon until 9 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. :::

Hartselle's Tanya Lybarger Childers Named to AHSVCA Hall of Fame Class of 2026

HARTSELLE, Ala. — Longtime Hartselle High School volleyball coach Tanya Lybarger Childers has been selected for induction into the Alabama High School Volleyball Coaches Association (AHSVCA) Hall of Fame Class of 2026, recognizing a coaching career that spanned 25 years and helped establish one of Alabama’s premier volleyball programs.

A Hartselle High School graduate and former standout athlete, Childers returned to her alma mater in 1991 as a teacher and coach. She would go on to build a volleyball program known throughout the state for its consistency, competitiveness, and tradition of excellence.

Childers served as Hartselle’s head volleyball coach from 1992 to 1996 and again from 2002 to 2021. During her tenure, she compiled an impressive 1,101-463 record, winning nearly 70 percent of her matches.

Under her leadership, the Lady Tigers became a perennial state contender. Hartselle advanced to the state tournament 13 times and reached the Final Four on nine occasions. The program’s crowning achievement came in 2012 when the Lady Tigers captured the AHSAA State Championship. Childers also guided Hartselle to a state runner-up finish in 2020, along with 18 area championships and four regional titles.

Before her coaching career, Childers was already making history as a player. She helped lead Hartselle to back-to-back state championships and became Alabama’s first Gatorade Girls Player of the Year in 1986.

Known for her strategic approach to the game, Childers often compared coaching volleyball to solving a puzzle. Drawing from her background as a mathematics teacher, she developed teams built on preparation, discipline, and teamwork, helping keep Hartselle among the state’s top programs year after year.

While her accomplishments on the court are significant, Childers has often said the relationships she built with players were the most rewarding part of coaching.

“The relationships you develop with your players are really special because you know they last forever,” Childers said.

Former coaches and colleagues frequently pointed to her leadership qualities, which were evident even during her playing days at Hartselle.

In 2025, Childers was inducted into the Morgan County Sports Hall of Fame. Her selection to the AHSVCA Hall of Fame adds another milestone to a distinguished career that has left a lasting impact on Hartselle High School, the local community, and high school volleyball across Alabama.

Through decades of success, mentorship, and dedication, Childers built more than a winning program—she created a legacy that continues to influence generations of student-athletes.
