PARENTS: This should help you decide if the category of e-bike. If it does not fit all the requirements then it is a motorcycle requiring license and motorcycle endorsement to ride on the road. If you want help with it. Bring your bike to the PD and I will help you.

WARNING PARENTS: We are seeing a big increase in children riding e-bikes and e-motorcycles. Most are not wearing any safety equipment and not watching out for vehicles or pedestrians. Are E-bikes Safe for Kids?

E-bikes are not considered safe for kids. Research shows that e-bikes can be more dangerous than regular bikes. They cause a higher number of injuries (and more severe ones) and deaths than regular bikes. One reason is that they travel at much higher speeds.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reports that in the five years between 2017 and 2022 e-bikes accounted for:

about 53,000 emergency room (ER) visits (and likely more not treated in the ER)
104 deaths
As a result, the CPSC says that e-bikes are not recommended for kids younger than age 9.

For kids ages 9 to 12, they should not operate anything that travels faster than 10 mph, as higher speeds are linked to injuries. Since most e-bikes can reach speeds much higher than this, it’s not a good idea for kids this age to ride e-bikes, either.

We want the kids to enjoy their summer, but we don't want them hurt. We have now received 2 videos of kids riding e-bikes unsafely. Parents, please supervise the young kids especially when riding around traffic.

UPDATE TO TRAFFIC PATTERN:
Village Council passed Ordinance 1-26.08 making Howard Court one way only traffic from E. Maple St to Lincoln St SE. Traffic is only permitted to travel south bound on this section of Howard Ct. For reference Howard Ct is the road that is by the railroad tracks on E. Maple St and runs south behind several businesses on S. Prospect Ave. It was determined that the roadway is too narrow on Howard Ct at E. Maple St and only allows for 1 vehicle to fit on to Howard Ct. This was causing a traffic hazard for traffic due to the railroad tracks and the traffic light at Maple and Prospect. The ordinance took effect immediately but will not be enforced until proper signs can be posted by the Street Department. Signs are being installed today. The Police Department will begin enforcing the one-way when all the signs are posted giving proper warning to the public of the changed traffic pattern. We realize this will cause some inconvenience to some and don’t take these changes lightly but they were done for the safety of the community and all who travel here.
