Jennifer Sterling will trace the pivotal moments in land conservationist Aldo Leopold’s life that shaped his evolving view of humanity’s role in the natural world. Framed within the broader social and ecological changes of his time, this presentation culminates in the meaning of a “land ethic” — Leopold’s enduring call for a moral and ethical relationship between people and the land.

Sterling is a master educator and lifelong environmentalist with a career rooted in conservation and environmental ethics. She is the programs manager at The Aldo Leopold Foundation, where she creates programs that help people recognize their place in the natural community and their responsibility to care for the land.

This program is a partnership between the 11 libraries of McHenry County Libraries United and several nature and conservation organizations in our area in honor of the libraries’ shared Summer Reading Program: “Plant a Seed, Read.”

This event takes place at Raue Center for the Arts, located at 26 N. Williams St., Crystal Lake. There will be a cash bar and refreshments for sale starting at 6 p.m. The theater doors will open at 6:45 p.m. Book sales, including Leopold's “A Sand County Almanac,” will be made possible through Abalabix Bookstore of Crystal Lake. For ages 18 and up.

Join us on Wednesday, June 10, at 7 p.m. at Crystal Lake Brewing for a book discussion about "A Sand County Almanac," by Aldo Leopold. This event is for adults 21+ only.

"A Sand County Almanac" achieved prominence around the first Earth Day in 1970. Through science, history, humor and prose, Aldo Leopold uses "A Sand County Almanac" and its call for a land ethic to communicate the true connection between people and the natural world. The hope is that readers will begin to treat the land with the love and respect that it deserves. Join us for a shared book discussion with staff and patrons of McHenry County Libraries United. Snacks will be provided; beverages will be available for purchase.

Considered by many to be the father of wildlife ecology and modern conservation, Aldo Leopold was a forester, philosopher, conservationist, educator, writer, and outdoor enthusiast. Aldo and seven other conservationists started The Wilderness Society, which continues today as an advocate to restore America's wilderness areas. He wrote down his observations and thoughts about this new concept known as "land ethic," and although he died one year before his famous book, "A Sand County Almanac," was published, his ideas about nature and the environment continue today as his lasting legacy.
