What a fantastic day at the Special Olympics Track & Field event held at the Russell Street athletic complex! The Harvard Police Department was honored to attend and support such an inspiring event filled with determination, sportsmanship, and community spirit.

A special thank you to our School Resource Officers, Officer Timothy Schaeffer and Officer Fawne Russell, along with Franny the Comfort Dog, for spending the day cheering on the athletes and connecting with participants, families, coaches, and supporters.

Congratulations to all of the athletes for your hard work, dedication, and outstanding performances. Your positive attitudes and perseverance were truly inspiring to everyone in attendance.

We would also like to thank all of the agencies, volunteers, organizers, coaches, and community members who helped make this event such a success. Events like these are a great reminder of the power of inclusion, teamwork, and community support. Great job everyone!

Our School Resource Officers, Officer Timothy Schaeffer and Officer Fawne Russell, recently attended the annual School Resource Officer training hosted by the Massachusetts Juvenile Police Officers Association.

This training helps keep our officers current on best practices, school safety, youth engagement, crisis response, and building positive relationships with students, staff, and families. The SRO role is an important part of our department’s commitment to supporting a safe and welcoming school environment.

And of course, we can’t forget Franny, our Comfort Dog, who continues to be an important part of that mission and a favorite wherever she goes.

Thank you to Officer Schaeffer, Officer Russell, and Franny for representing the Harvard Police Department so well.

The Harvard Police Department joins the Massachusetts State Police and the entire law enforcement community in mourning the line-of-duty death of Trooper Kevin Trainor.

Trooper Trainor was killed early this morning after being struck by a wrong-way driver while on his way home from a public safety detail. When others were in danger, he did what police officers are called to do every day. He turned toward the threat, put himself in harm’s way, and acted to protect others.

Trooper Trainor served the Commonwealth with honor, professionalism, and courage. He was known as the kind of Trooper others wanted by their side, and his actions this morning prevented an even greater tragedy.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, fiancée, friends, classmates, and the men and women of the Massachusetts State Police.

Rest easy, Trooper Kevin Trainor. Thank you for your service and sacrifice. You will not be forgotten.

Today, I’m proud to share that the Harvard Police Department has equipped every patrol cruiser with an Emergency Birth Kit to help officers be better prepared for the unexpected. Our officers are often first on scene, and this is another step in making sure they have the tools needed to respond to critical situations safely and effectively. This effort reflects our commitment to preparedness, officer support, and the safety of our community.

April is here and so is our distracted driving enforcement campaign. And no, this is not an April Fools joke.

That text can wait. That notification can wait. That social media post can wait. The road cannot.

Throughout the month of April, officers will be out paying close attention to distracted driving violations. If you are driving, put the phone down, keep your eyes up, and focus on the road.

No message is worth a crash, an injury, or a ticket. This April, give your full attention to driving and help keep our roads safe for everyone.

Fi****ms Licensing Update

The Harvard Police Department would like to inform the public of recent changes to the Commonwealth’s fi****ms licensing requirements, effective April 2, 2026.

Under the 2024 fi****ms modernization law, the state has now imposed a new, specific cutoff date of April 2, 2026, for the updated basic fi****ms safety course requirements. Beginning on that date, new applicants for a Fi****ms Identification Card (FID) or License to Carry (LTC) must complete a basic fi****ms safety course that meets the updated requirements, including a livefire component, and must be drawn from the Commonwealth’s approved basic fi****ms safety course list.

Applications submitted prior to April 2, 2026, with a completed basic fi****ms safety course, will be grandfathered under the prior requirements and are not required to meet the updated livefire standard.

The 2024 fi****ms modernization law applies only to new applicants. All current FID and LTC holders are grandfathered and are not required to complete the updated basic fi****ms safety course or livefire training.

An updated list of approved basic fi****ms safety courses is available through the Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security. For additional information or questions regarding local licensing requirements, please contact the Harvard Police Department.

We’re excited to share some good news about new technology coming to the Harvard Police Department.

Harvard PD has been awarded $127,716.20 through the Commonwealth’s Body Worn Camera Grant Program. This was a highly competitive grant process, and we’re grateful to be selected. The funding will allow us to acquire the latest technology to support transparency, accountability, and stronger documentation of police interactions. It will also help enhance communication during calls for service, including tools that support live language translation when language barriers exist.

As we roll this out, residents can expect improvements such as clearer audio and video, more reliable documentation of calls for service, and features designed to help officers communicate more effectively during interactions, including live language translation support when language barriers are present.

We’ll share more information as the project moves forward, including our implementation timeline, training, and the policies that guide how this technology is used.

Thank you for your continued support.
