Sheriff Joseph Lopinto announces the arrest of former JPSO employee Aaron Verrette, 51, of Metairie, for operating a vehicle while impaired. Verrette was a 14-year JPSO veteran. His employment was terminated following his arrest.

At around 9:20 this morning, First District deputies responded to a report of a man sleeping behind the wheel of a car in the 1700 block of Veterans Memorial Blvd. in Metairie. Verrette initially drove away from units, and was stopped nearby. A traffic stop was conducted, and Verrette was transported for chemical testing. Verrette submitted to chemical testing, and his breath sample showed a reading of 0.155g%. He was arrested and transported to the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center to be booked. The incident occurred while Verrette was operating a personal vehicle.

Happy 100th Birthday, Dorothy Jones! ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿ’™

Yesterday, members of our Community Outreach team had the pleasure of visiting Ms. Dorothy Jones, who was born on August 14th 1926, to celebrate a very special milestone and present her with a Centenarian blanket in honor of her 100th birthday!

Ms. Jones has seen a lot in 100 years. Raised in Laurel Valley as the second oldest of eight siblings, she remembers her father working on a plantation for just $1 a day. She later moved to Marrero in 1939, raised three children and now has grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

A longtime member of St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church, Ms. Jones says her faith has remained an important part of her life. She still reads her devotional every day, and when we asked her the secret to living such a long life, she reminded us, โ€œRemember, God said that we are His.โ€

We also learned that sheโ€™s a BIG Saints fan. Also, when it comes to food, smothered okra is a favorite.

It was an honor getting to spend some time with Ms. Jones and hear a few of the memories she has collected over an entire century.

Sheriff Joseph Lopinto announces the arrest of Iverson Arnanda-Mena, 25, of Terrytown, in connection with a shooting that occurred on September 6, 2026, in Metairie.

At approximately 6:10 a.m. on the incident date, deputies responded to a report of a shooting at a bar in the 2500 block of N. Woodlawn Ave. Upon arrival, they located the victim inside a vehicle near the intersection of N. Woodlawn Ave. and Hearst St. He was suffering from at least one gunshot wound and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The victim ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital on September 7, 2026.

Through their investigation, detectives identified Mena as the suspect, and on September 9, 2026, detectives located Mena in Terrytown. During the course of their follow-up investigation, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Mena for second-degree murder and arrested him on the outstanding warrant. He was subsequently transported to the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center, where he was booked.

This investigation is still ongoing. There is no additional information currently available for release.

The finish line is getting closer for Recruit Class 66!

Over the past several months, our recruits have been hard at work tackling every aspect of academy training. Theyโ€™ve been challenged physically and mentally. The recruits spent each day building the skills, knowledge, and discipline theyโ€™ll need as they prepare for careers in law enforcement.

Now, with graduation just around the corner, Class 66 is heading into the final stretch before graduating. Weโ€™re looking forward to watching them finish strong!

Last night was our first Fall 2026 Citizenโ€™s Academy class!

Participants kicked off the evening with a tour of our 911 Communications Center, where Director Chad Breaux gave them an inside look at the people, technology and operations behind emergency communications in Jefferson Parish.

Back at our Training Academy, Sheriff Joseph Lopinto officially welcomed the class and sat down with participants for a Q&A, giving them the opportunity to ask questions and hear directly from the Sheriff about JPSO.

Over the next 9 weeks, class members will continue exploring different areas of JPSO and learning more about the work that goes into serving Jefferson Parish every day.

Sheriff Joseph Lopinto announces the conviction of 60-year-old Donell Bluain for a series of r**es committed on the Eastbank of Jefferson Parish between 1985 and 1986. Bluain was found guilty earlier today in 24th Judicial District Court after approximately 45 minutes of jury deliberations.

Between 1985 and 1986, JPSO investigated multiple reports of various crimes including home invasions, peeping tom incidents, r**es, attempted r**es, and burglaries, all occurring in nearby neighborhoods. The r**e victims' accounts of the incidents were similar, indicating that a black male entered their residence through a window before assaulting them. In response to these incidents, a special task force was established to solve the cases. The initial findings of the investigations led detectives to believe that the crimes were being carried out by the same perpetrator. Though DNA testing was not available at the time of the incidents, biological specimens were collected from the crime scenes and stored.

In 2021, JPSO Cold Case Detectives reopened the investigations. Detectives learned that Bluain moved to Georgia and was currently serving a life sentence for r**e offenses. During the current investigation, Detectives traveled to Georgia and obtained biological evidence from Bluain. This evidence and the preserved evidence were submitted for forensic analysis. The evidence ultimately linked Bluain to several of the crime scenes.

Based on the physical evidence and other investigative findings, Detectives obtained arrest warrants for Bluain in late 2023 on six counts of aggravated r**e. He was subsequently indicted by a Jefferson Parish grand jury in July 2025 and was extradited from Georgia in August 2026 to face prosecution. Bluain's sentencing is scheduled to take place later this month.

The efforts displayed by the JPSO Cold Case Detectives, forensic personnel, and prosecutors are commendable. Those continued efforts brought these decades-old cases to resolution.

Fifty years ago today, Detective Kenneth Smith was killed in the line of duty.

At the time of his death, JPSO did not yet have an Honor Guard. Detective Smith was laid to rest without the formal law enforcement honors and presentation of colors that we now use to recognize those who make the ultimate sacrifice in service to our community.

This morning, 50 years after his death, members of the JPSO Honor Guard gathered with Detective Smithโ€™s family at Veterans Memorial Square to give him the honors he was unable to receive in 1976. The Honor Guard rendered full honors and presented the colors to his widow, Melanie, in recognition of his service and sacrifice.

โ€œWe want to make sure officers are honored properly. Thatโ€™s why we do what we do,โ€ said Captain Wilkie, commander of the JPSO Honor Guard.

Detective Kenneth Smithโ€™s service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
