As we wrap up EMS Week, we want to acknowledge our members and recognize the incredible dedication and service they provide to our organization and community.

In 2025, our volunteers gave an incredible 5,826 hours of service to our community, responding to over 700 calls for service, training, and participating in community outreach programs.

We were proud to recognize Vinny Wheeler as our 2026 Member of the Year. Vinny has been a dedicated member for over 30 years and has served in nearly every leadership role and on numerous committees within the organization. He has also served as an FTO, helping train and mentor new members throughout the years. Vinny continues to go above and beyond by picking up second crew calls, responding as a first responder, and always supporting our organization.

On Wednesday, we were proud to host our annual EMS Week dinner to celebrate and honor our members alongside their families. It was an opportunity to recognize the commitment of our volunteers and thank the families who support them throughout the year.

This year, our organization was honored to receive the first ever John J. Capobianco Community Service & Leadership in EMS Award from Hartford HealthCare’s Charlotte Hungerford Hospital. The award honors John’s lifelong dedication to community service, servant leadership, and commitment to EMS education.

Our community outreach program trained many residents in first aid and CPR. Earlier this year, our members also came together to train Town Hall and Highway Department staff in first aid and CPR. In recognition of EMS Week, we also hosted a CPR and First Aid class for members of our community, helping provide essential lifesaving skills and training to local residents.

We have continued to work with our mutual aid partners through training events and by assisting neighboring towns when they need help.

We are very proud of our organization and our members. Thank you to each of them for everything they do, and thank you to their families for supporting them when they have to leave during dinner, holidays, storms, and family time to serve our community.

Today, members from multiple agencies came together at Lewis S. Mills High School to participate in a Prom Promise mock car crash demonstration.

A Prom Promise is a pledge made by high school students to their parents, schools, and friends to remain completely sober, drug-free, and distraction-free on prom night. It is a nationwide initiative designed to prevent tragic accidents and encourage safe driving and responsible decision-making during prom season.

Thank you to Burlington Volunteer Fire Department, Burlington, Burlington Ambulance, Harwinton Volunteer Fire Department, Harwinton West Side Volunteer Fire Department, Lifestar and the Burlington Police Department for joining us in today’s event.

Events like this highlight the importance of neighboring departments working together. Strong partnerships between our fire, EMS, and police agencies allow us to better serve our communities, train together, and respond effectively when real emergencies happen. By coming together for programs like Prom Promise, we hope to make a lasting impact on students and help keep everyone safe during prom season. Thank you to Region 10 for allowing this important event to take place.

Harwinton EMS is proud to recognize two of our incredible members for their dedication and service over the past 20 years, James (Mark) Hilton and Jennifer Hilton. Throughout their time with us, they have shown commitment not only in the field but also behind the scenes.

Jenn reached her 20-year milestone this February. She held the role of Captain, Lieutenant and currently serves as our Supplies Chairperson and Quartermaster, ensuring our team always has what we need to serve the community safely and effectively.

Mark also celebrates 20 years of service and continues to play a vital role as our Vehicle Chairperson, helping keep our fleet ready to respond to emergencies. Mark assisted with the project of our ambulance build, ensuring it was reliable to serve the community.

During their time with Harwinton EMS, Jenn and Mark have spent most of their Friday nights on call, showing an incredible commitment to the organization and the community. As Field Training Officers, they’ve also taken pride in mentoring new EMTs and helping shape the next generation of providers. Their dedication has left a lasting impact both on the team and the people they serve.

Tonight we had the pleasure of hosting the HWSFD Explorers for CPR training, with some of our own members joining in as well. These young adults are taking the initiative to learn and are the future of public safety. Training opportunities like this help build the teamwork we rely on at every scene and reinforce the importance of providing high-quality patient care. We’re excited for many more opportunities to train together in the future.

Did you know?
HWSFD First Responders respond to serious medical calls in town alongside us. Across the country, Fire/EMS co-response has become the industry standard, ensuring patients receive care as quickly as possible with the right number of trained providers on scene.

Why having additional trained responders on scene matters:
1. High-quality CPR – More trained hands allows providers to rotate compressors frequently, maintaining strong, effective CPR which is critical for cardiac arrest survival.
2. Faster patient care – Additional responders allow lifesaving interventions to begin immediately while EMS prepares transport.
3. Patient movement – Extra personnel help safely move patients, especially in tight homes, stairwells, or difficult environments.
4. Early arrival – On many calls, HWSFD arrives on scene first on their side of town, allowing care to begin sooner.
5. Better outcomes through teamwork – Coordinated response between fire and EMS ensures efficient care and improves patient outcomes.

We appreciate their partnership and the opportunity to train together.

Around 3:00 PM, we were notified of a motor vehicle accident that required two ambulances. While both units were operating at the scene, we received a third call in town. About three minutes later, we were dispatched to a fourth call.

With the assistance of the Harwinton Westside First Responders, Harwinton Fire Department and our dedicated volunteers, we were able to staff three ambulances and successfully handle all four calls. We were also assisted by Hartford Healthcare Northwest Medic 1, Burlington Fire Department Paramedic, and Litchfield Ambulance, who stood by to provide additional coverage and support.

Days like today highlight how important it is for our community to have three ambulances available to ensure continuous coverage. This is a true testament to the dedication of our volunteers and their commitment to serving the residents of Harwinton.
