Weather Update & Warming Center Information

As we prepare for a round of winter weather, I want to share an update and a few important reminders with our community.

The City of Haskell will open the Civic Center as a Warming Center beginning Saturday, January 24th at noon through Monday, January 26th at noon, weather permitting.

**This warming center is intended for individuals and families who do not have a safe or reliable heat source in their home.**

At this time, we have limited volunteers signed up, and we could really use additional help so we can spread shifts out and avoid long stretches for any one person. If you’re able to volunteer for a short time, it would make a big difference for our community.

With ice accumulating on the roads, the safest option is to stay in place if you are able. Please avoid unnecessary travel, use caution if you must be out, and check on neighbors; especially the elderly and those who may need assistance.

A few important notes about the warming center:

The City will provide cots.

Individuals using the warming center should bring their own personal essentials (blankets, medications, toiletries, snacks, etc.).

If a power outage occurs due to downed power lines and the Civic Center does not have electricity, the warming center will have to close.

We will continue to monitor conditions and share updates as needed. Thank you to everyone who has already volunteered, and thank you to our residents for looking out for one another. Haskell always comes together when it matters.

Please stay warm, stay safe, and don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions or can help.

FREEZING RAIN PREDICTIONS:

A widespread significant ice event is likely to take place Friday through Sunday morning across Texas. Ice accretion on trees and power lines will certainly cause power outages in spots. We cannot tell you who will lose power until things start to happen.

A large swath of the state, including the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, is predicted to see 0.20 to 0.60+ inches of ice. Some areas may see 0.75" or more of ice accumulation out in East Texas. ANY amount is really enough to make travel dangerous (especially on bridges and overpasses). If you can, just stay home if you are north of a line from Del Rio to San Antonio to Houston.

These values are subject to change in both magnitude and placement as we get closer.
