Our Neighbors to the South:

Denmark Township was very isolated in the mid 1800's. Point Douglas was booming with logging operations , churches, post office, school, docking facilities for barge traffic and fully stocked stores. Then came the Hastings railroad bridge which put a nail in the coffin for Point Douglas with Prescott's railroad bridge in hot pursuit. But it was Spiral Bridge that turned this potential city into a ghost town and Hastings into a boom town. Built in 1895 the straight portion was tied to south Denmark's Mississippi shore.

The wooden spiral bridge across the Mississippi River at Hastings, MN was the only one of its kind in the world. Designed by Benjamin D Cadwell of Hastings, it had a spiral approach to avoid the business section, which was on the riverfront. Otherwise, the long grade would have occupied three blocks of the street. The bridge had a channel span of 35 feet and its height was 72.2 feet. This wooden structure was created during the horse and buggy days when Hastings was a boom town and river steamers brought many settlers to Hastings after the Civil War. The Spiral Bridge was torn down in 1953 after the completion of a new street cantilevered bridge.

Did you know? Pioneer Joseph Mozoe built the first log cabin in Point Douglas 1838. By 1858 Point Douglas was a thriving lumbering and supply center with a busy sawmill, handling logs floated downriver from the forests up north, a a school, two general stores, a post office, a blacksmith shop, two hotels, 15 to 20 homes, four warehouses and a ferry site to Hastings and Prescott, WI. In 1858, Denmark Township was established the same year that Minnesota became a state.
