Benefit: Information Services to Local Business
The public library can serve all businesses in the community, but it may be more important to self-employed individuals and small or home-based businesses. The public library is often the only source of affordable and available information for small businesses. The information covered benefits business decisions such as: following government procedures and regulations, marketing by analyzing demographic information, new product development, the development of business plans, and improved management practices. The public library is an often overlooked contributor to the economic health of the community.

Benefit: New Business Development
The public library can support the entrepreneur with information such as regulations, business registration, training programs, or accessing business resources. The public library offers the hours, space, and resources to build upon lifelong learning, career development, and literacy skills to help individuals in their new business developments.

Please Vote Today:
From American Library Association: With all this new technology, why do we even need librarians these days?

Librarians are the ultimate search engine. They know how to find the best information, whether that's a book or a Web site. Teaching others how to find, use and evaluate information is a unique skill that librarians bring to a society suffering from information overload.

From American Library Association: Why should libraries get scarce tax dollars, when there are other such needs for health care, criminal justice, jobs, police and fire protection?

Libraries are part of the solution to many of these problems.
Libraries help children and adults become literate, productive citizens.
They provide afterschool programs for kids, adult and family literacy classes, job information centers, books and other resources to help of all ages lead better, satisfying lives.

From American Library Association: Won't the Internet make libraries obsolete?

Absolutely not!
In fact, if we didn't already have libraries, we'd have to invent them.
That's because the library has something very important that the Internet simply does not have - the librarian. The Internet is a wonderful resource and a great convenience but it's far from perfect.

According to one study, 70 percent of health and medical information on the Web is misleading or inaccurate.

Librarians have been collecting and organizing information for centuries. They are really the "ultimate search engine." They can help you find the best source of information, whether it's online or in a book or pamphlet or video.

From American Library Association: Won't computers and the Internet put the library out of business?

On the contrary, we'll need libraries more than ever!

For many children and adults, libraries are the only place they go to use the computer or surf the Web.

Libraries are places where people connect not just with books and computers but with other people.

Libraries have always been places for opportunity and self-help.

That will never go out of style, no matter what new technology comes along.

Because they are free for patrons, not many people consider the role they play in the economy, but libraries play a key role in financially strengthening local community. They provide a work space for telecommuters, supply free internet access for people looking for employment opportunities, and offer job and interview training for those in need.

According to the ALA, 73% of public libraries assist their patrons with job applications and interviewing skills, and 48% provide access and assistance to entrepreneurs looking to start a business of their own. In many cases, like the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, local governments work together with libraries to help small business owners by providing them with online and in-person resources, including financial guidance, contract opportunities, market information, business plans, and much more.

In helping individual community members financially succeed in their lives and small businesses, libraries help entire communities succeed at boosting their economy and growing their local wealth.

I grew up down the street from my local library, so I spent a lot of my childhood there, either hidden away in the stacks reading books, using the internet to access Myspace, or meeting up with friends to work on school projects. I've always…
