Hatfield Fire was dispatched to the field hockey field at Smith Academy at 17:47 hours for the reported shed fire. Initial reports indicate the shed was struck by lightning. Engine 1 arrived on scene with two members and the Massachusetts State Police to a fully involved shed and stretched an 1 3/4" hand line and protected the adjacent electrical shed that also housed the well pumps for irrigation and also protected the commercial field mower nearby. One wall of the exposure was burned on the outside but no equipment was damaged. Whately Fire Department arrived on scene and assisted with extinguishment and overhaul. There were no reported injuries but the shed and it's contents are considered a total loss.

On Thursday, July 9th at 6:00 PM, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation – Highway Division will be holding a Virtual Public Information Meeting on its replacement of the bridge decks in Hatfield and Whately that carry Routes 5 and 10 over Interstate 91.

The construction sequencing will require lane reductions on the bridges/Routes 5 & 10 with temporary signals and alternating traffic flows as well as temporary overnight lane closures on I-91 below during bridge deck demolition and construction.
