On September 17, 2022, members of Flotilla 16-4 participated in Hatteras Village' annual "Day at the Docks" festival, created as a celebration of the "Spirit of Hatteras" after the village recovered from Hurricane Isabel in 2003, as an intact community, anchored by the commercial and charter fishermen and women.
Day at the Docks is a yearly weekend event, excluding pandemics. This year, it featured a six-course chef-prepared seafood dinner on Friday evening. Saturday activities included a “Fishy K Fun Run”, Chowder Cook-off, Demos and Dock Chats, Children’s Activities, Music and other Main Stage Activities, a Seafood Throw Down, various local exhibitors and vendors, and a community space.
The day’s events culminated with a “Blessing of the Fleet”, a dockside service after which the United States Coast Guard (along with commercial and privately-owned vessels) exit the harbor with a memorial wreath dedicated to all whose lives were lost at sea. The wreath was solemnly laid in the waters of the Pamlico Sound as a tribute to fallen mariners.
This year’s event was well attended and Flotilla 16-4 members who engaged with the public were, from left to right: John Baust, Larry Griffin, John Zachwieja and Bill Hennig.
