The Hattiesburg Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire in the 900 block of Cypress Street at approximately 3:50 p.m. on Thursday, August 20.

Crews arrived on scene and quickly brought the fire under control and conducted a search of the structure. No one was inside the residence at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.

Engine 2, Engine 5 and Ladder 1 responded to the call.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Last week at William Carey University and again this morning at The University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg firefighters traded hoses and helmets for boxes and carts to help students get settled in for the new school year.

Move-in days are always a busy time across Hattiesburg, and our crews were glad to lend a hand while welcoming students and families to the community.

To all of the students starting a new semester, welcome to Hattiesburg.

Yesterday, August 16, at approximately 5 p.m., crews responded to a brush fire near an abandoned structure in the 2600 block of Lakeview Road.

With high temperatures and dry vegetation across the area, we have responded to several brush and grass fires over the past week. Even a small spark can quickly spread through dry grass and debris.

While Forrest and Lamar counties are not currently under a burn ban, residents are encouraged to avoid unnecessary outdoor burning and use extra caution with grills, fire pits, ci******es and equipment that may create sparks. Never leave an outdoor heat source unattended, and make sure all flames and smoking materials are fully extinguished before leaving the area.

We have to give credit to Hattiesburg Police Department. They know how to host a great co****le tournament.

They’re just having a little trouble keeping the trophy.

Congratulations to Engineer Tyler Wells and Captain Ben Thompson on winning the second annual Bags & Badges Co****le Tournament and bringing the championship back to Hattiesburg Fire.

A new school year is underway, and Hattiesburg firefighters were proud to help welcome students back this morning.

HFD joined members of the Hattiesburg Police Department, city staff and community members at schools across the city to cheer on students as they arrived for their first day.

To every student, teacher and staff member, have a safe and successful school year!

Summer Splash Days is headed to Chain Park tomorrow for an afternoon of water-filled fun with the Hattiesburg Fire Department.

Join us Thursday, July 23, from 1 to 3 p.m. and come prepared to get soaked. Closed-toe shoes are required, and a parent or guardian must complete a waiver before children can participate.

We’ll see you at Chain Park.

Dangerous heat is expected across Hattiesburg this week, with the National Weather Service forecasting heat index values as high as 110 degrees.

We know a thing or two about high temperatures and want to remind everyone to take the heat seriously.

Drink plenty of water throughout the day, limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the afternoon and take frequent breaks in air-conditioned or shaded areas. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle, even for a few minutes.

Check regularly on older adults, neighbors and others who may be especially vulnerable to extreme heat. Know the signs of heat exhaustion, including heavy sweating, dizziness, nausea, headache and weakness. Confusion, loss of consciousness or a body temperature of 103 degrees or higher may indicate heat stroke. Call 911 immediately and begin cooling the person while help is on the way.

Stay hydrated and take precautions to keep yourself and others safe this week.

Summer Splash Days rolls into Tatum Park tomorrow, July 16, from 1 to 3 p.m.

Hattiesburg firefighters will be turning up the water for an afternoon of outdoor fun and a chance to cool off from the summer heat. Bring the kids, wear clothes that can get soaked and plan to spend the afternoon with us.

Closed-toe shoes are required, and a waiver must be completed before participating.

Summer Splash Days are back tomorrow, July 9, at Jaycee Park.

Our crews will be out from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. with plenty of water, fun and a chance for kids to cool off during these hot summer days.

Parents and guardians, please make sure children wear closed-toe shoes and come ready to get wet. We’ll see you tomorrow at Jaycee Park.
