Hattiesburg Police Department (Official)

The Hattiesburg Police Department is currently led by Interim Police Chief Peggy Sealy.

The Chief works to guide the Department in its service to a 55 square mile area, annexed region. The Department consists of the Office of the Chief of Police, Operations, Direct Support, and Administrative Bureaus, and is authorized a staff of 140 sworn and 108 non-sworn personnel.

Hwy 49 Southbound

Hattiesburg Police are on scene of a single-vehicle accident on Highway 49 southbound near Roy Tucker Road involving an overturned dump truck that lost its load.

One southbound lane is currently open while crews work to clear the roadway.

Motorists traveling through the area should slow down, use caution and expect delays until the scene is cleared.

The Hattiesburg Police Department made an arrest Sunday morningfollowing reports of shots fired in the 100 block of Hardy Street.

At approximately 6:15 a.m. on August 23, 2026, officers responded to the area and made contact with James Matthew Barnes, 34, of Hattiesburg. Barnes told officers he had called 911 and fired the shots.

Barnes was taken into custody and charged with aggravated assault and shooting into a motor vehicle.

The investigation remains ongoing.

The Hattiesburg Police Department is investigating a shooting that occurred at approximately 1:37 a.m. Saturday, August 22, in the 200 block of N. 25th Avenue.

Two people sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.

The investigation remains ongoing.

The Hattiesburg Police Department is investigating a single-vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 4:09 p.m. on August 17 in the 2500 block of West 4th Street.

Officers arrived to find a vehicle that had gone over a ledge and overturned. Three occupants were outside the vehicle and alert when officers arrived.

The driver was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries and was later charged with DUI, no insurance and driving without a license.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Hattiesburg Police responded to a workplace accident in the 3000 block of Hardy Street at approximately 10:46 a.m. on August 17, 2026.

Upon arrival, paramedics were already on scene providing aid. The individual was later pronounced deceased at a local hospital.

The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation, and no additional information is available at this time.

The Hattiesburg Police and Fire Departments are responding to a rollover accident on Interstate 59 northboundanenear mile marker 68.
At this time, the northbound lanes are shut down.

Traffic is backed up for several miles, and drivers are asked to avoid the area if possible. Motorists should use alternate routes and allow extra travel time. Drivers should slow down, stay alert and give first responders room to work.
