Enhanced Concealed Carry – Do you really need it? Maybe. Maybe not.
In Mississippi, legally carrying a concealed handgun can be divided into 3 categories with each category having its own set of rules, advantages, and disadvantages, so to speak.
(1) Constitutional Carry
(2) Standard MS Fi****ms Permit
(3) Enhanced Carry
Let's look at Constitutional Carry first. Basically this simply means if you can otherwise own a handgun in MS you aren't required to get a permit from the State to carry it concealed. Sounds great, right? It might be, however depending on your situation the limitations may make this impractical.
With Constitutional Carry the “off-limits” places are the exact same as the ones associated with a Standard MS Fi****ms Permit (Visit www.fast-academy.com for a list).
Secondly, you cannot legally conceal carry (or possibly even car carry) in some/many/most other States. Constitutional Carry has no reciprocity (is not recognized) by other States as a legal means of concealed carry. Some States have their own Constitutional Carry, but by and large you won't be able to legally conceal carry in any other States with very few exceptions.
So if you only want to conceal carry in MS, and you don't mind being limited by the “off-limits” locations, then Constitutional Carry is for you. You don't need a permit, much less Enhanced Carry.
Now let's look at the Standard MS Fi****ms Permit. There are only two reasons to get this. (1) You want reciprocity to legally conceal carry in most States and the “off-limits” locations are fine with you. Or (2) You intend to get your Enhanced Carry so you need this permit.
Those would be the only two reasons to get a Standard MS Fi****ms Permit.
Finally we've reached Enhanced Carry. This is simply an “upgrade” to a Standard MS Fi****ms Permit. This credential requires a one-time, eight hour training course, but the advantages are significant. (1) With a competent instructor you will learn a lot about safety, proper technique, MS laws, and a myriad of other topics. (2) The places “off-limits” are reduced to basically four and you don't typically find yourself in any of them anyway (Visit www.fast-academy.com for a list). (3) You get reciprocity with two additional States that aren't included with a Standard MS Fi****ms Permit. South Carolina and Nevada.
