Oseola McCarty Youth Development Center Our goal is to empower the youth of Hattiesburg to win in every area of their lives.

Oseola McCarty worked a lifetime ironing clothes and became a national icon of generosity after donating her life savings of $150,000 to the University of Southern Mississippi to established scholarships for needy youth. She appeared on ABC,NBC, CNN, BET, MTV and the Oprah Winfrey Show as well as being interviewed by notable television reporters Bryant Gumble and Barbara Walters. After her generou

s gift to USM, she was featured in Newsweek, The New York Times, People, Life, Ebony, Essence, and Jet magazines. She was also the recipient of many awards such as the Presidential Citizens Medal, Wallenberg Humanitarian Award, and the UNESCO Avicenna Medal.

Have you ever felt or experienced the true meaning of community? The best definition of a community is a group of people who share mutual concern, support one another, and feel a strong sense of belonging. Oseola McCarty Youth Development Center had another “free giveaway day“ to show love to our community.

We are so grateful to our Restoration Church family under the leadership of Ro Taylor, our OES women’s group, some of our USM college students, a few of our Wings to Work participants, and even some of our community youth. THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING US AS WE TOGETHER SUPPORT OUR COMMUNITY!!! ❤️🥰🫶🫶💕

Our second cohort for our Wings to Work Program is underway, and we are in search of a community partner or donor who could contribute a trailer that would support our cohort members as they excel in their CDL classes!

Our cohort members have been excelling and working incredibly hard to build the skills they need to rise in the workforce with a professional certification. As a small nonprofit, we are committed to empowering members of our community in every area of their lives, alongside the help and support from our wider community. By providing a trailer, our community partner would be helping us expand our hands-on learning opportunities as we strengthen workforce readiness in our local community.

💙💛 COMMUNITY IN ACTION! 💛💙

What an AMAZING day of service at the Oseola McCarty Youth Development Center! 🙌🏾

Today, Saturday, August 8, our community came together for a special Community Work Day, and we are incredibly grateful for every volunteer who gave their time, energy, and helping hands to make our center an even better place for the children, youth, and families we serve.

🎓 A very special THANK YOU to the JUMP Scholars Program of The University of Southern Mississippi! Your scholars showed up ready to serve from 10:00 AM–12:00 PM, and their hard work and positive energy made a tremendous difference.

⛪ We also extend our heartfelt appreciation to Ro Taylor and Restoration Church of Hattiesburg for answering the call to serve and helping make today a HUGE success. Your partnership and commitment to our community mean so much to us!

❤️ And a special thank you to our AmeriCorps volunteer who was present and helped ensure that our work day stayed organized and successful. We appreciate your leadership, service, and willingness to jump in wherever needed!

Today was a beautiful reminder of what can happen when community, service, and purpose come together. Every task completed and every hour volunteered helps us continue creating a safe, welcoming, and empowering environment for those we serve.

At Oseola McCarty Youth Development Center, our mission is “To Empower Youth to Win in Every Area of Their Lives,” and we are thankful to have a community willing to roll up their sleeves and help us make that mission a reality! 🦋
