Rain Couldn't Stop the Journey! ✨🌧️

This past Saturday, we were delighted to welcome members of First Missionary Baptist Church of Bay St. Louis to the Sixth Street Museum District!

Despite the rainy weather, this wonderful group made the trip to explore the rich history and inspiring stories found throughout our museums. Their visit included stops at the African American Military History Museum, the Historic Eureka School, and a sweet treat at Smith Drug Company.

From learning about the sacrifices of military heroes to exploring the legacy of education and community, their day was filled with history, fellowship, and meaningful connections. Thank you for choosing to spend your day with us! Your enthusiasm and dedication to learning remind us that history is worth the journey—even in the rain

This week, we had the pleasure of welcoming Jackson Public Schools JROTC students while they visited Hattiesburg as a part of a summer camp hosted by William Carey University.
These future leaders walked through the stories of brave men and women who served our nation with courage, determination, and honor. From learning about military history to reflecting on the sacrifices of those who came before them, the students engaged with history in a powerful and meaningful way.

We believe that when young people connect with the past, they become better prepared to lead the future. Thank you, Jackson Public School JROTC, for spending part of your week with us. Your discipline, respect, and eagerness to learn were truly inspiring!

During African American Music Appreciation Month, we’re highlighting the joy of discovering music in all its forms.

"Music Is..." by Brandon Stosuy (illustrated by Amy Martin) is a vibrant board book for children that brings musical ideas to life in a fun and accessible way. One of South Mississippi’s greatest cycling resources is the Longleaf Trace, a scenic trail that connects communities across the Pine Belt and welcomes riders of all ages and skill levels.

Harrison Central High School’s AP U.S. History class wrapped up the school year with a visit to the Sixth Street Museum District! Students explored the rich history and culture of our community by touring the African American Military History Museum, the Oseola McCarty House Museum, the Historic Eureka School, and Smith Drug Company. They also stopped by one of the Green Book Historical Markers, gaining a deeper understanding of the stories that shaped our region and nation.

From local history to powerful lessons of resilience, service, philanthropy, entrepreneurship and education, the students took advantage of the many things the District has to offer. A perfect way to close out a school year! Enjoy your summer!
