The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office was honored to join community partners for the 14th Annual “On the Wings of Hope” and THRIVE Candlelight Vigil in observance of International Overdose Awareness Day. Together, we remembered and commemorated those whose lives were lost to the opioid epidemic.

Alongside Community Action for Social Justice, the Great South Bay Coalition, Maxed Out Drug Prevention, Youth Enrichment Services, THRIVE, Family & Children’s Association (FCA), the Long Island Recovery Association (LIRA), the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD), HUGS, Inc., Families in Support of Treatment, Gabriel’s Giving Tree, and community members, united to break the stigma, increase awareness, support recovery, and honor the lives and memories of those we have lost.

Through remembrance, compassion, and collective action, we continue working toward a future filled with hope, healing, and support for individuals and families affected by substance use.

Brian Blackford pleaded guilty, admitted to robbing two Flagstar Banks in Suffolk County in December 2025. The defendant made out with approximately $5,300 in cash by using demand notes. He was arrested with co***ne, stolen cash and a paper note stating, “give me $10,000 cash no funny business.” He now faces five and a half to eleven years in prison for his criminal actions.

Our children deserve better.

I stood with state lawmakers, Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine, and Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina today to support legislation fixing New York’s broken bail laws.

The 2019 reforms were short-sighted and they are failing our kids. Under current law, prosecutors cannot even ask for bail when a defendant targets children with drugs and sends a dozen middle schoolers to the hospital – as in the case of Wilmer Castillo Garcia poisoning William Floyd Middle School students with bad drugs. That is unconscionable.

Prosecutors must have the power to keep dangerous defendants in custody before they harm another child. Our justice system should protect kids, not give repeat offenders multiple chances to hurt them.

Thank you to Senator Dean Murray for leading this fight to fix these ridiculous bail laws in Albany.

Last week, our team at the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office had the opportunity to spend the morning with families and community members at the Paul Drum Life Experience Project Police Fest at Mitchell Park.

Events like this give us a chance to step outside the courtroom, meet the people we serve, and have meaningful conversations with families in a relaxed setting. We’re proud to be part of community events that bring people together and create positive experiences for young people.

The integrity of our mail system is fundamental to the trust and security of every resident in this community. This defendant is alleged to have systematically removed cards containing gifts from the mail stream, turning expressions of generosity and goodwill into opportunities for theft. My office will not tolerate the exploitation of our postal system for personal gain. I thank the U.S. Postal Service Office of the Inspector General (USPS OIG) for their crucial assistance in this case.

Today, DA Tierney announced that a former Suffolk County correction officer was sentenced to jail for forcing an inmate to perform oral s*x inside the Riverhead Correctional Facility while he was on duty.

The vast majority of correction officers uphold their duties with the honesty and professionalism our justice system depends on. This defendant took advantage of the trust placed with him to commit an outrageous abuse of power and a serious crime. My office will continue to prosecute such cases vigorously to safeguard the public’s trust. Thank you to the Sheriff’s office for their assistance to our investigation.

Pablo Aguilar-Alvarez was detained by immigration enforcement agents after being arrested for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle in the Second Degree, an unclassified misdemeanor, less than two weeks after his fourth felony DWI conviction.

Following the jury trial conviction, he was released by the court pending sentencing, despite the District Attorney’s request for remand, and explicitly barred from driving. The defendant was deported in 2024 following his third DWI conviction and is currently in the U.S. illegally.

“It is self-evident that given his history of multiple felony convictions, Pablo Aguilar-Alvarez is a clear and present danger to any Suffolk County citizen traveling on our roads,” said District Attorney Tierney. “He is a repeat felony drunk driver who does not belong behind the wheel. Less than two weeks after his fourth felony DWI conviction, and despite explicit instructions not to drive, the defendant once again got behind the wheel of a vehicle. I want to thank my Detective Investigators for apprehending the defendant. I extend my gratitude to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for their swift action in taking this individual into custody and working with my office to help protect Suffolk County residents.”
