Happy Earth Day and to our 2019 Page Program where some of our students did a community project cleaning up our local parks!⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Conducting a community project is an integral part of the Suffolk County Page Program. Working with your fellow peers to determine a need in our community and figuring out ways to put ideas into action is a vital step in understanding the role of local government and being an elected official. Prior Page community projects have ranged from park/beach cleanups, food drives, and a virtual town hall to provide a safe space for students to discuss the impacts of COVID-19.⁣⁣

Sneak Peak: During our 12-week program, students will be grouped into two caucuses. This provides a safe place for students to express their views in a smaller group setting while building confidence and communication skills. Here, students will be able to establish leadership positions and create/discuss issues that themselves and their fellow caucus members stand for. ⁣⁣

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, New York is experiencing a critical shortage of poll workers. Historically, 55 percent of poll workers in New York are over the age of 60, putting them at higher risk of COVID-19 complications. Younger people could help fill the expected shortage for the 2020 general election.⁣⁣
Today is National Poll Worker Recruitment Day. You are eligible to serve as a poll worker if you are a New York State registered voter! Poll workers get paid for training and each day they work.⁣⁣
For more information, visit www.elections.ny.gov or contact the Suffolk County Board of Elections at [email protected] or (631) 852-4536. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

More about the Suffolk County Legislature Page Program

The Suffolk County Legislature Page Program, established in 2015, is a 10-week summer internship designed to provide the guidance and training needed for college-age students to become the next generation of leaders by immersing them in county government and instructing them on how to be dedicated community stewards. The program aims to build leadership skills, spur confidence and offer valuable hands-on experience that will encourage members of our next generation of leaders. Those considering the Page Program will share an interest in government, community service and politics.

During each week of the program, Pages meet and work with community leaders and other stakeholders to identify and address issues that are of concern to their neighbors. Pages are assigned to a Legislative District office where they work directly with the Legislator and his or her staff. They may analyze legislation, read and summarize reports, work with constituents, write letters, or any number of other tasks. Additionally, Pages participate in a mock Legislature, through which they debate and vote on key issues, create press releases and learn what is required to be an effective lawmaker.

To ensure the safety of all students and alleviate any concerns, the 2020 Page Program is operating as a hybrid program, offering students the ability to participate virtually via Zoom. The program this year includes numerous service-related projects, which will all adhere to the current New York State guidelines regarding safe protocols related to COVID-19. These projects will help students gain first-hand experience on what it’s like to be involved in local county government.
