Yesterday, on December 17, we gathered at William Floyd High School to honor the birthday of William Floyd and officially recognize William Floyd Day in Suffolk County.
As someone who was born and raised right here, a proud graduate of William Floyd High School, and someone who still calls this community home, it is truly meaningful to honor Suffolk County’s only signer of the Declaration of Independence.
William Floyd was born in Mastic on December 17, 1734. He was a lifelong resident of Suffolk County who went on to serve as a militia leader, a delegate to the Continental Congress, and a Founding Father of our nation. His home, the Old Mastic House, still stands today as a reminder that American history was made right here in our own backyard.
Through Resolution 776-2025, which I was proud to sponsor, December 17 will now be recognized each year as William Floyd Day in Suffolk County—ensuring that his legacy is remembered and taught, especially as we approach the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 2026.
William Floyd Day is about more than honoring the past. It’s about strengthening local pride and reminding our children that history didn’t just happen somewhere else—it happened here, through people who walked the same roads and lived in the same communities we do today.
Thank you to the Tri-Hamlet 250 Committee, students, educators, and community leaders who joined us to make today so special.
