It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of Joe K; our friend, mentor, and steadfast volunteer. Joe retired from being our Sunday docent and school trip guide after nearly 30 years at the Lock House last year at 90 years old. As a symbol of our gratitude for the generosity of his time and knowledge he gave to the Lock House, the Museum dedicated the pivot bridge to Joe. It was his favorite thing to demonstrate to visitors and he never hesitated to open it and talk about it. He loved the Lock House and canal history.
His presence will be missed far and wide as he impacted so many aspects and lives of Havre de Grace. We will miss him greatly.
Read more about him on our website.

A big shout out to Julie Ruhnke, Lock House board member and Tracy Robertson with the HDG Youth Commission for creating this event. And a special shoutout to Bomboy's Candy for donating gift certificates to all of the entrants and to John, the Hot Dog Guy, who came out with his cart and donated his time and hot dogs to make this a special day for all of us!

Our Story

Open seasonally April through October.

Built in 1840, the Lock House served as home to the lock tender and as the office for the toll collector of the Susquehanna and Tidewater Canal Company, which was in operation from 1840 into the 1890s. The museum tells the canal transportation history of the S & T Canal from Wrightsville, PA to Havre de Grace and life in mid-19th century America. The Lock House Museum located along the beautiful Susquehanna River in Havre de Grace, Maryland, hosts several special fundraising events, such as Craft Beer and Wine (April), Pirate Fest (June), and the Candlelight Tour and Holiday Boutique (December).
