The “Double Take”. When I first started driving I was taught when you pull up, slow it down, and size up your approach. Spot your rig for success, then get out and "Double Take" the spotting for accuracy.

Look around for:
◾️Manhole covers where the riggers might go.
◾️Overhead wires.
◾️Could you CAN out or in more, do you have to?
◾️Do you have a good spot to go in service or are we going to be throwing ladders?
◾️Is there room for the second due truck?
◾️Can you pull the portable ladder off?

The longer you are in the service the more you will realize spotting is the foundation of all fire attacks. If the truck is in the wrong spot, the engine might be in the wrong spot too and not be able to successfully deploy a line with ease.
No room for hero’s in a team

Good advice....

This is a slide from my presentation “Developing the Mindset of the Offensive Aerial Operator”.
🚒
You should respond to every alarm with the intent of positioning your aerial and putting it into play.
🚒
There are many reasons to have this mindset, beyond what is listed on the slide.
🚒
If you respond to a particular building one time, or 30 times a year, and stage, you’re doing yourself, the team and your community a tremendous disservice.
🚒
First of all it tells me that you believe that it’s not really gonna be a fire, and therefore, you’ve already lost.
🚒
Second, it tells me that in the event of a real emergency, you will probably be reacting nervously and playing catch up.  You’ll probably be real excited and yelling half sentences and incomplete thoughts to anyone in the apparatus or within 50’ of the rig, and none of it will make sense.
🚒
As a result, you’ll get a bad spot that won’t contribute to the event and you’ll spend the next few hours excusing away all the reasons as to why you suck.
🚒
Treat every response as if it is a fire, and your actions matter. No two responses will ever be the same – time of day, weather, traffic, parked cars, obstacles and obstructions, location of the fire, specific dispatch information, other responding units, etc. the list goes on.
🚒
Being proactive, expecting fire and having the proper mindset is what will help lead you to becoming a successful aerial apparatus chauffeur. Knowing your rig, practicing, and having patience and humility will help to round that out.
🚒

Is your teenager finally old enough to mow the lawn? Then be sure to discuss gasoline safety at the same time; talk about why it is important to let the engine cool before refueling. Gasoline vapors are highly flammable and refueling a hot motor can ignited them. In the past five years (2014-2018), 335 lawn mower fires caused one civilian death, four civilian injuries, two fire service injuries and an estimated dollar loss of $1.6 million. Tips: • Store gasoline outside only in approved containers. • Keep gasoline away from all heat sources, such as smoking materials, pilot lights, campfires, and grills. • Fill a cooled lawn mower. Never refill while it is hot. • Keep hands and feet away from a mower while it is running. http://ow.ly/wNLu50umY04

Firefighters Australia

🚒👨‍🚒👩‍🚒 May 4th is International Firefighters Day & also the feast day of St Florian, the Patron Saint of Firefighters.

St Florian was the first known Commander of one Firefighting squad in the Roman Empire. He lost his life, as well as those of his colleagues, for protecting the same humane ideas which Firefighters all over the world share even today.

Happy International Firefighters Day & to Firefighters everywhere stay safe!
