Our recent batch of bobwhites about a week old. They are so cute running around and jumping for flies. But this brooder building is cooking here in middle Georgia today!

We’ve been running our quail hatchery Mullis Quail Covey for over 5 years now, and in that time, we’ve met some incredible people—from our loyal clients to fellow business owners.

I’ve come to realize that while friendly competition keeps us sharp, there is something much more valuable: shaking hands with those who share our mission. We might run our farms differently, but we are all working toward the same goal: preserving the natural bobwhite quail so there are more wild birds for generations to come here in Georgia.

We recently had the pleasure of stopping by the Buckarama at the Perryfairground to shake hands with the folks at Split Thistle Quail Farm. Just like us, they run their farm as a family, working alongside their kids to do things the right way.

There’s a new generation of hatchery owners coming up, and we believe it’s time to change the culture. Instead of keeping to ourselves, we want to be more helpful, open, and collaborative. By sharing knowledge and supporting one another, we can have a much bigger impact on the future of the bobwhite.

For us, it’s not about the spotlight or social media—it’s about the hard work behind the scenes and the pride we take in our birds. There’s no better feeling than hearing, “Hey man, those birds flew like rockets.” We all strive to produce strong, healthy birds that are acclimated to our Georgia climate—and, of course, birds that keep you on your toes if your aim is a little off! 😜

Let’s keep the tradition alive and the future of the bobwhite bright.

Shout out to our wonderful supplier at Freedom Flyers.

Finally cleaned out the hatch boxes this afternoon. Wow is all I can say. Everytime I look in the brooder buildings and they are full of birds it makes every single hot 🥵 sweaty😓 day worth it.

*I’ll count the un-hatched eggs tomorrow and give the hatch rate.

Think 7 days is the limit for quail eggs? Think again! 🥚

I’ll be the first to admit, I used to be a firm believer that quail eggs weren’t worth hatching after a week. But after learning from some fellow breeders, I put it to the test. Turns out, if you keep them in a cool environment and flip them twice a day, you can hold them up to 14 days without seeing a significant drop in hatch rates.

We just pulled these babies from the incubator—these were set exactly two weeks after our last hatch. Even with the challenge of a power outage the other night (which meant an extra day of drying before we could move them), we had a fantastic hatch!

It’s a great reminder that proper egg care makes all the difference. Who else has experimented with holding times? Let us know your results in the comments!

*6,000 eggs were bought from Freedom Flyers on July 1st. Half was put on July 2nd. Two weeks later the other half was put on this is that 2nd half.

Bobwhite quail 2 week old. Luckily everything worked out with the power outage the other night. Our process allows healthy birds to survive.
