M E Roden Memorial Library The M. E. Roden Library is located in Hawkinsville, Georgia, 140 miles southwest of Atlanta. The Pulaski County Library (renamed the M. (according to DAR records).

The historic town of Hawkinsville is situated on the banks of the Ocmulgee River. Roden Library) joined the Ocmulgee Regional Library System in 1971. Pulaski County formed its first library as early as 1878. “In the year of 1878 a petition for the charter for the incorporation of our Public Library and Literacy Society was signed by prominent citizens…”. Unfortunately, the library became inactive in 1897 and its possessions were sold at an auction later that same year. The Uplift Club organized another library in 1910. In 1936, the WPA extended much needed support to the library and assisted it in its growth. The facility has continued offering library service from that year until the present. This library was named in memory of Ms. M. Roden who served as librarian for twenty-five years. She worked very often without pay and toiled until she was too frail and feeble to walk up the steps of the building where the collection was housed. At that point, she had someone carry her up the stairs. It seems fitting that the library was named for her since she was so devoted to it.

There’s plenty happening at M.E. Roden Library this October! 🎃

Get into the Halloween spirit with our Classic Horror Film Noir series, a Mad Scientist Lab, and a special evening of stories and poems from Edgar Allan Poe. We’ll also have Dungeons & Dragons, our pumpkin decorating contest, the Hawkinsville Book Festival, and more throughout the month.

LOCAL author Shelly Berry Hill will be attending the 2026 Hawkinsville Book Festival! Shelly J. Berryhill is an honor graduate of Georgia Tech and the founder of Georgia Appraisal Services in Hawkinsville, Ga. For more than 20 years, he has served his community as a city commissioner while serving on numerous local and state boards including the Municipal Employee Benefit board and the Gas Authority of Georgia. He chairs the Pulaski Archway Executive Board. He was previously selected as Citizen of the Year by the local Chamber of Commerce and is the author of seven books.
He teaches Sunday School at Broad Street Baptist Church where he serves as a deacon. He and his wife Vonnie raised two children, Kristen and Kyle.

Thrilled to announce that author Brenda Anderson will be attending the Hawkinsville Book Festival!
Brenda Anderson grew up on her family’s farm in North Central Massachusetts. She was a police administrator for 37 years and saw people on their worst days. She observed the changes in society and values. She also owned a small retail business with her husband and felt the benefits of local support. After Brenda retired, she and her husband drove around the country in an RV and explored small towns. Chatting with people from all walks of life and different places showed her that everyone would like to point society in a more hopeful direction. Brenda wrote “Lessons from My Father” as a guidebook on life for readers of all ages. She uses her father’s timeless stories and wisdom to encourage the reader to reflect on their own values and take action through journaling prompts. Now living in Middle Georgia, Brenda also writes about small towns and places on her Facebook blog-Small Town Discovery.
