During tonight’s storm the Hawthorne Fire Department responded to numerous calls for service including wires down, trees down, hazards from storm damage, and a call to St Anthony’s which had our members hopeful to get some zeppoles a little early after working up an appetite. Unfortunately they were not made yet but 2 tents were found to have blown off the ground and were stuck in the trees. The aerial from Truck 2 was used to tie off ropes to better control slowly lowering the tents down by crews from Engine 1 and Rescue 5. Luckily the tents will be back up and ready for the Feast this week which is running from 6pm-10pm Wednesday night through Friday night and 5pm-10pm on Saturday night.

On Monday night members of the Hawthorne Fire Department received a class on gas emergencies by Chief Jerry Knapp from Rockland County. The class consisted of reviewing how we respond to and handle these calls and a refresher on understanding the readings our meters give us. To finish up a demonstration was shown of what happens when an environment in the explosive range finds its ignition source. Thank you Chief for this great night of training.

The Borough is already looking patriotic from the last sale so why not continue it as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of our great nation. The Hawthorne Fire Dept Auxiliary has reopened sales for flags in an effort to paint the town red, white, and blue. By participating, you'll not only help us showcase Hawthorne's patriotic spirit, but you'll also provide meaningful support to our Fire Department Auxiliary, whose dedication directly helps the Fire Department to keep our community safe every day.

Last year the department put in service a helmet camera on one of our members as a trial for potential use amongst the department as a whole. Over the course of this time the department has had numerous incidents that have been well documented with said camera. This has proven to be a very useful tool for the department, to be able to rewatch the incident from a first person point of view. We have been able to recognize mistakes and small details that wouldnt havent been seen otherwise. Today we have decided to share a small segment of this footage to show what your first responders face upon arrival of these incidents. The clip below is the conditions the department faced upon arrival at a House Fire on Goffle Road in December of last year.

At 6:22pm the Fire Department was dispatched to North Ethel Ave for a reported large brush fire behind a home. Chief arrived and confirmed a large area of brush burning along the railroad tracks threatening a rear deck. Squad 3 and Truck 2 clearing from another call arrived and stretched 2 lines from the North Ethel side. Engine 1 stretched 1 line from 9th Ave while Engine 4 and Rescue 5 members assisted crews with extinguishing the fire and overhaul. Companies were able to hold the fire from extending past the area of origin and were back in service around 7:40pm. Thank you to the Hawthorne EMS and our Auxiliary for proving rehab and refreshments.
