Hawthorne Fire Department had a fantastic time at Hawthorne Elementary School today talking with students about fire prevention!

We covered important topics like smoke alarms, home escape plans, stop-drop-and-roll, and what to do if you see a firefighter in gear. The kids asked great questions and were super engaged—it’s always rewarding to help the next generation stay safe.

A big thank-you to our neighboring Thornwood Fire Dept. Fire Department for joining us! Working together strengthens our community and shows the students the strong partnership between our departments.

Special thanks to the staff and students at Hawthorne Elementary for the warm welcome.

Remember: Fire prevention starts at home. Test your smoke alarms this month and practice your family’s escape plan!

Never Forget.

This weekend, members of the Hawthorne Fire Department once again took part in the Tunnel to Towers 5K — in honor of our own, Firefighter Michael J. Lyons.

Mike was a Hawthorne volunteer and an FDNY Squad 41 firefighter. On September 11, 2001, he responded to the World Trade Center and gave his life trying to save others. Our members have participated in this event every year since 2018 to keep his name, his service, and his sacrifice in front of us.

As in years past, we stood alongside firefighters from departments across the country and world. That is the part that stays with you. September 11 did not only happen in New York City. It reached every firehouse, every family, and every community that still shows up to remember.

We honor Mike Lyons. We honor the 343. We honor every first responder and every family still carrying this day.

Never forget.

Training never stops.

Hawthorne Fire Department members spent the day sharpening low-angle rescue skills—using ropes, webbing, a litter, and coordinated teamwork to move a “patient” safely across sloped terrain.

These scenarios look simple until you’re the one on the line. Practicing the systems, communication, and patient packaging now means we’re ready when the real call comes.

Stay safe out there.

. .
In memory of Firefighter Michael J. Lyons
FDNY Squad 41
July 20, 1969 – September 11, 2001

Twenty-five years later, we still say his name.

Michael J. Lyons was 32. He served five years with Engine 44 on the Upper East Side before joining Squad 41 in the Bronx. He was also a volunteer with the Hawthorne Fire Department. He had an engineering degree from Manhattan College, a gift for making people laugh, and a habit of working extra jobs—roofs, a hot-dog truck, the deli counter where he first met his wife, Elaine.

On the morning of September 11, Squad 41 answered the call to the World Trade Center. Michael went in with his brothers. He did not come home.

He left behind Elaine and their toddler, Caitlyn Rose. Their second daughter, Mary Michael, was born weeks later and given his name. His brother Brian went looking for him that day in spare gear and never stopped rebuilding the place where Michael fell.

The street in front of Hawthorne Fire Department is named Michael J. Lyons Plaza—so no one who drives past has to wonder who he was.

He loved the job for the responsibility, the training, and the chance to help someone who needed it. That is still the measure of him.

Never forget Firefighter Michael J. Lyons.
Never forget the 343.

Rest easy, brother. We have the watch.

We Don’t Recruit Tourists.

We’re not looking for people who “want to help.”
We’re looking for people who can’t sit still when the tones drop.

If crawling into a burning building, cutting someone out of a car at 3 a.m., or working a wreck while the rest of the world is still asleep doesn’t light something up in your chest… keep scrolling.

Hawthorne Fire is looking for a few more Type-A operators.

-People who hate being average.
-People who get restless when life feels too safe.
-People who actually show up when it counts.

This isn’t a social club.
This isn’t a resume line.
This is real work, real risk, and real consequence.

You’ll train harder than most people work.

You’ll miss sleep, holidays, and easy weekends.
In return, you’ll earn something most people will never understand — the respect of the ones who run toward the same chaos you do.

If that sounds like you, stop scrolling and start showing up.

Volunteer. Serious only.
