The situation with Iran is not as simple as headlines make it sound.
For decades, the United States and Iran have been adversaries. U.S. leadership views Iranโs ruling regime as a threat because of its nuclear ambitions, support of regional militant groups, and long-standing anti-American policies. From a U.S. national security standpoint, preventing a nuclear-armed Iran and limiting its regional influence is considered critical.
But itโs important to understand something equally important: the Iranian people are not all the same, and they are not automatically aligned with their government.
In recent years, millions of Iranians have protested against economic hardship, corruption, and restrictions on personal freedoms. Many have openly called for reform or even regime change. At the same time, others support the current government or simply want stability and fear foreign intervention could make things worse.
The key point: This is a complex geopolitical conflict between governments โ not a simple โpeople vs. peopleโ situation.
Understanding the difference between a regime and its citizens matters.
