Washington, MO

A quick trip out west to deliver DRM’s Elevator Emergency Management (EEM) eye-opening Awareness Lecture.

The members of the Washington Fire Department should be proud of their commitment to enhancing their knowledge, improving service to their community, and keeping one another safe when responding to stalled occupied elevator incidents.

A special thank you to William Rombach for recognizing the value of this specialized training and for his dedication to bringing it to his department.

Work smart. Work safe. Train often. Train safe.

Did You Know?

The topside view of a Basement Traction cable elevator system. This type of system is commonly found in older buildings, retrofits, or buildings with architectural and/or height restrictions where putting the machine on the roof isn’t practical.

Be The Professional

This means nothing to the firefighters in the machine room… but everything to the elevator mechanic arriving to fix the problem.

Before you LOTO the power, grab a roll of painter’s tape from your elevator rescue kit and write down the error code. Stick it to the inside of the controller door — right where the mechanic will find it.

Most mechanics will appreciate the heads-up.
The cranky ones? Well… they’ll just find something else to complain about.

Perfect information never comes. Decide anyway.

You have to make decisions with incomplete information during elevator emergencies. Elevators don't wait for perfect clarity, and neither should you. Define ownership, coordinate intentionally, and move operations forward.

Waiting for perfect information is waiting forever. 🎯

You'll never have complete knowledge of:
- Exact mechanical failure
- Precise car position
- All passenger medical conditions
- Perfect solutions with zero risk

Make decisions with what you know. Gather information as you go. Adjust as needed.

The alternative? Analysis paralysis while passengers deteriorate and conditions worsen.

Define ownership NOW. Make decisions NOW. Coordinate intentionally NOW. Move forward NOW.

Incomplete information is the reality. Decisive action despite it is the requirement.

Accountability isn't about control. It's about ownership.

Scene ownership isn't about control for the sake of control—it's about accountability. When everyone's waiting on someone else, no one owns the risk. And when no one owns the risk, the passengers inside that car pay for it.

Someone has to own the outcome. Not just participate. Not just provide input. OWN IT. 💪

When things go right, that person coordinated effectively. When things go wrong, that person owns the decision that led there.

This is what accountability looks like: willingness to make decisions with your name attached to them.

Without clear accountability, you get distributed blame and zero learning. With clear accountability, you get decisive action and continuous improvement.

The passengers deserve someone willing to own their rescue, not a committee avoiding responsibility.

⬇️ Comment DRAGON for accountability-based command training

05/20/2026

The moment you arrive and assume control of the scene, you're already involved in the outcome.

Whether you act or choose not to act, you are influencing what happens next.

True professionalism means recognizing that time is not a pause button.

It means actively managing the scene even while you wait: → Using appropriate tools and equipment → Maintaining communication → Ensuring team requirements are met → Conducting ongoing risk assessment

Waiting without assessment, without communication, without situational ownership?

That allows risk to grow unchecked. And when something goes wrong, "we were waiting for the mechanic" doesn't protect you from accountability.

Silence is not safety. And waiting is still a decision.

Work smart. Work safe. Train often. Train safe.
