So many came out to say goodbye to my father Richard S. Goldberg. I am humbled and touched and I know he would be honored. He was loved. Thank you to the Mayor and Council, all Boro employees, The EMT, Police, Fire Department, the Boys & Girls Club, and more. Everyone. To Jonathan Woll for his personal and moving service, my sister Melissa Joanne for her amazing words, Uncle Bob and Aunt Lynn for being there for us, there is not enough space here to thank everyone. My mother Sharon Goldberg who I could not have gotten through these last day without. Thank you all, everyone who was there or reached out or even held us in your thoughts. (Thank you Lynford Morton for the photos)

"I have often told people it is easier to throw stones than to catch them. I know catching stones is sometimes part of my job, but recently, my character was unfairly attacked for political purposes and I think it’s time to set the record straight.

I perform weddings for close friends and family only, as a favor to them. That has always been my policy and it has nothing to do with gay marriage. I don’t charge a fee for this, or any other service I perform as Mayor. At the most, I have performed 1 or 2 weddings a year for the past 11 years, again, for people I consider close to me. I spend a lot of time crafting the ceremony and vows to meet the personality of the couple as I know them. This is not only time consuming but requires knowledge of the two people involved.

On the subject of gay marriage, as I stated in a Facebook post, my brother was gay. He was married, and while I didn’t perform the ceremony, I would have. I would have done it without hesitation or concern for what anyone thought. He was my brother. However, if someone either straight or gay that I don’t know asks me to marry them, the answer is no. I’ll gladly help them find someone to perform the ceremony, but I won’t do it. I’m not a Justice of the Peace; I’m a Mayor.

I’m not asking anyone to agree or disagree with my policy. I only ask that you respect it.

Sincerely,
Mayor Richard Goldberg
