Last night, West Blount Fire & EMS District responded to a structure fire within our district. Upon arrival, crews found that the closest fire hydrant, located directly across the street from the incident, was out of service and marked with a black bag.
We understand that the bags placed over hydrants are not aesthetically pleasing, and we know they sometimes raise questions from the public. However, they serve an important purpose. Those markings immediately notify responding firefighters and mutual aid agencies that the hydrant is unreliable or unavailable for use during an emergency.
In this case, that bag mattered. It prevented crews from wasting valuable time attempting to connect to a hydrant that could not provide water.
We often speak about water supply limitations, aging infrastructure, and additional challenges that exist across parts of our district. We also understand that hearing those concerns repeatedly can sometimes sound excessive and sound like we’re fear mongering or crying wolf. But situations like last night are a reminder that these are not hypothetical issues, they are real conditions that firefighters encounter during actual emergencies.
Our goal has never been to complain or create alarm. Our responsibility is to identify problems, prepare for them, and continue working toward solutions that improve fire protection for our community. That work happens every day — through training, planning, maintenance, partnerships, and continued efforts to strengthen the services we provide.
We remain committed to serving this community to the best of our ability while continuing to push for improvements that make our district safer for everyone.
