On June 6, we pause to remember D-Day — one of the most consequential days in the history of our nation and the free world.

On the beaches of Normandy, ordinary men were asked to do the unimaginable. They stepped off landing craft into gunfire, chaos, fear, and uncertainty — not because they wanted glory, but because duty called. Many never made it home. Many came home forever changed. All of them helped turn the tide of history.

For our older veterans, this day is not just a date in a history book. It is a reminder of a generation that understood sacrifice in the deepest sense — sacrifice for country, for freedom, for one another, and for people they would never meet.

At VFW Post 6812, we honor the courage of those who stormed the beaches, flew the missions, served at sea, cared for the wounded, supported the fight, and paid the price for liberty. We also honor every veteran who carries forward that legacy of service.

Freedom was not inevitable. It was defended by young men who faced impossible odds and moved forward anyway.

Today, we remember them. We honor them. And we recommit ourselves to never taking for granted what they fought to preserve.

Never forget D-Day.
Never forget Normandy.
Never forget the cost of freedom.

June is PTSD Awareness Month.

For many veterans, the battle does not end when the uniform comes off. PTSD is real, and it can affect veterans, service members, first responders, families, caregivers, and survivors in ways others may never see.

This month, we pause to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and remind our brothers and sisters that asking for help is not weakness — it is strength. No veteran should feel alone, ashamed, or forgotten.

To our fellow veterans: your service matters, your story matters, and your life matters. Reach out. Check on one another. Listen without judgment. Sometimes one conversation can make all the difference.

VFW Post 6812 stands with those living with PTSD and with the families who support them.

June is PTSD Awareness Month.

June is PTSD Awareness Month.

June is PTS(D) Awareness Month.

While post-traumatic stress does not solely affect veterans, veterans are statistically more likely than the general public to suffer the effects of PTS(D), with a documented 6% of male veterans and 13% of female veterans experiencing it in their lifetimes (though actual numbers may be substantially higher, as many of those who struggle with post-traumatic stress do not seek diagnosis or treatment). The number of veterans diagnosed with PTS(D) is higher among those who've served in recent conflicts (for example, up to 29% of Iraqi Freedom veterans) than those who served nearly a century ago (3% of WWII and Korean War veterans) but it is important to remember that what we now know as PTS(D) was known by a number of other names in the past: "Shell Shock," "Battle Fatigue," "Soldier's Heart," "Combat Stress Reaction" and even the misleading "Nostalgia."

“Asking for support is not waving a white flag, it is a tactical decision to stay in the fight for your family, your future and your life,” said VFW National Commander Carol Whitmore.

As a VFW Auxiliary members, you can help by knowing the signs, memorizing the Veterans Crisis Line number and sharing resources with those in need. Use the linked articles below to get started.

This Memorial Day, we remember that freedom has never been free.

Behind every flag placed at a gravesite is a story unfinished. A birthday missed. A child who grew up without a parent. A spouse who never got one more goodbye. A family forever changed by the cost of service to this nation.

Today is not about barbecues, sales, or a long weekend. It is about honoring the brave men and women who gave everything — their futures, their dreams, and their lives — so that we could live ours in freedom.

As we share these images and remember the fallen, may we never become numb to the sacrifice they made. Their names deserve to be spoken. Their stories deserve to be remembered. Their sacrifice deserves our gratitude not just today, but every day.

We remember them.

We honor them.

We will never forget them. 🇺🇸
