Congratulations to Officer Jake Montgomery on being selected as the class president for the 361st Basic Training Class!

🎉 Congratulations to our 361st Basic Training Class President, Officer Jake Montgomery of the Fort Hays State University Police Department!

Officer Montgomery reflected on his journey and shared the following:

"I was born in Hays, Kansas, on August 10, 1999. Even with leaving Hays as a baby, Hays has always been a second home to me. That is one reason why I decided that I was going to return to Hays to attend Fort Hays State University for college, where I received a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice and reunited with the most amazing woman in the world, who I then married, all in Hays. Now, I get to give back to the community that has given so much to me.

I grew up playing baseball, basketball, football, and running cross country. I also loved spending time outdoors hunting with family and friends. I was kind of your typical Kansas kid. Ever since the day I was born, I have been around law enforcement. Cops have always been the awesome, brave, and helpful heroes to me. I have been blessed to grow up getting to know the best side of law enforcement, and I hope that I can spread the experience that I have always known to others around me.

It has been an absolute honor to attend KLETC with the 361st Basic Training Class. Even with our small number of 13, I think it has to be some of the best to ever go through KLETC. It is a small, but awesome, group of people.

Thank you, Fort Hays State University, and thank you, KLETC, for letting me chase my dream of working in law enforcement. I hope to continue to make everybody proud and to help share the experiences I have always had involving law enforcement with others so that they too hopefully share the same thoughts about law enforcement as I do."

Congratulations, Officer Montgomery, on this incredible achievement and on being selected by your peers as Class President. We look forward to celebrating with the entire 361st Basic Training Class at graduation this Friday at 1:00 p.m.

👏 Congratulations, Class 361!

This year, it will be different.

This week, members of the Hays Police Department will again travel to Topeka for the annual Kansas Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony to pay our respects to those officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice. We will stand shoulder to shoulder with our brothers and sisters in blue and honor these fallen heroes, but this year, it will be different.

The Hays Police Department Honor Guard will join honor guards from across the state to stand watch at the memorial, but this year, it will be different.

We will bow our heads in prayer for the fallen officers and their families, but this year, it will be different.

We will hear the bagpipes, the roar of the 21-gun salute, and the playing of taps as we honor their service and sacrifice, but this year, it will be different.

Tomorrow, the name of Hays Police Sergeant Scott William Heimann will be added to the Kansas Law Enforcement Memorial.

For Scott's family, our department, our community, and for all who knew and loved him, this year will be different.

Sergeant Heimann is gone, but he will never be forgotten. We ask our community to join us in remembering his service, honoring his sacrifice, and keeping his family, friends, and fellow officers in your thoughts and prayers.

Update: he has been located and is safe! Thank you all for the assistance!

🚒 IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR HAYS RESIDENTS 💧

Tomorrow, March 17, 2026, the Hays Fire Department will be conducting our annual fire hydrant inspections and flow testing.

📍 WHERE WE WILL BE:
We are focusing on two main areas:

Area 1: Hall St. to Augusta Ln., between 15th St. and 27th St. (Including the TMP Campus).

Area 2: Walnut St. to FHSU, between 5th St. and 14th St. (Including Gross Memorial Coliseum, Bickle Schmidt Sports Complex, and surrounding areas).

❓ WHY WE DO THIS EVERY YEAR:
This is part of a city-wide coordinated effort to keep our community safe!

Emergency Readiness: We inspect every hydrant to ensure valves operate properly and are free of damage or obstructions so they are ready at a moment's notice in an emergency.

Firefighting Power: We check the water pressure and volume in each neighborhood to ensure we have exactly what we need to fight fires.

Clean Water Systems: Flushing the mains helps distribute chlorine throughout the system, which eliminates bio-filming and keeps the city’s water mains clean.

⚠️ WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
You might experience slight discoloration in your water supply during this time. Don't worry—there are no health risks, and we are doing everything we can to minimize inconvenience! Also, for your safety, please avoid driving through any water discharging from a fire hydrant.
