Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center

Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center The Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center is a wetland education center specializing in salt marsh ec

The Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center offers an introduction to the salt marsh community and the ecology of San Francisco Bay and Delta through education programs to local schools, exhibits and weekend interpretive programs. Its unique location at the approach to the Hayward-San Mateo Bridge provides easy access to schools throughout the Bay Area. Latest statistics indicate naturalist services

were provided to schools in Pacifica, Pinole, Livermore, Walnut Creek, and Foster City, as well as to schools throughout the District. Although the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District is committed to serving the needs of its local residents, it is clear that the demand and interest for its programs and activities reaches far beyond its jurisdictional boundaries. Through the efforts of the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District as a member of the Hayward Area Shoreline Planning Agency public access has been acquired to thousands of acres of shoreline property. Trails lace over seven miles of terrain from Highway 92 to San Leandro. Historic salt marshes, reclaimed for salt farming in the late 1800’s, have been returned to their natural state. Sensitive habitat has been set aside for shorebirds, waterfowl, and the endangered salt marsh harvest mouse. Gold Rush era salt farming landscapes have been preserved and protected for future generations. An education center has been built to introduce thousands of school children and adults to this unique and valuable natural resource.

Catch the December King Tides on December 13th and 14th, where the high tide will reach almost 9 feet!

Sunday 12/13: High Tide @10:29am at the Bay
Monday 12/14: High Tide @11:12am at the Bay

These high tides make for exciting nature viewing, as the high water levels can flush out secretive animals like the Ridgway’s Rail. Raptors, egrets and herons will also likely be out on the hunt. Come down to the Shoreline and walk the trails. Don’t forget to share any photos of the King Tides with the hashtag

As November is Native American Heritage month, it’s important to acknowledge and understand Indigenous culture and America’s history of colonialism. That can start with a question: Whose land are you on?

Resources like Native Land’s app and website (https://native-land.ca/) allow you to better understand not only the natural places you explore and recreate on, but the land you live on.

We at the Hayward Shoreline acknowledge we are on Chochenyo and Ohlone land.

California King Tides are early this year! They will occur November 15-16, and again December 13-14. These predictable highest of high tides, while not themselves a result of sea level rise, offer a view of how rising sea levels will impact our future. California Coastal Commission invites citizen scientist observations of King Tides “to help us plan for sea level rise and motivate us to stop burning fossil fuels.”

Come walk the trails to see the shoreline transformed, and share your photos of King Tides this year with the tag or by going to coastal.ca.gov/kingtides and uploading your photos.

Sunday 11/15: High Tide @11:37am at the Bay
Monday 11/16: High Tide @12:18pm at the Bay

We'd like to know your thoughts!

The Hayward Area Shoreline Planning Agency (HASPA) is working to develop a Shoreline Adaptation Master Plan that studies the effects of sea-level rise and develops a roadmap for adaptation. HASPA invites the community to our new webpage that summarizes the project to date including videos, maps and our preliminary design alternatives. Residents are invited to share their thoughts directly at: https://haywardshorelinemasterplan.com/ The comment forum will be open until June 12th.
