⚠️PSA- scam alert⚠️

Recently, one of our deputies handled a fraud complaint in Sawyer County. The victim received a phone call from a restricted number from someone pretending to be a member of the Sawyer County Sheriff's Office, who advised the victim they had a warrant for their arrest for failure to appear, contempt of court, and avoidance of civil duties. The names the scam artists used were Lt. Copeland and Sgt. Reese, neither of which are real members of the Sawyer County Sheriff's Office.

The victim then received a text message with a barcode from the same unidentified person, and was told to scan the barcode to pay a fine instead of being arrested on the warrant.

Through the deputy's investigation, it was determined that the barcode was connected to an account of the scammer.

Please watch for these scams as they are becoming more specific to the areas of the people they are targeting. If there are any questions or you may feel like a phone call or email is a scam, please contact our dispatch and we will have a deputy or investigator look into it.

Our non-emergent phone number is 715-634-5213.

From August 19 through September 7, law enforcement agencies across the country will be stepping up efforts to prevent impaired driving as part of the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign.

Driving while impaired by alcohol, ma*****na, or other drugs can affect your judgment, reaction time, coordination, and ability to safely operate a vehicle. Even if you don’t feel impaired, you may still be too impaired to drive.

Before you head out, make a plan for a safe ride home:
- Designate a sober driver
- Use a rideshare or taxi
- Ask a friend or family member for a ride
- If you’re hosting, help your guests find a safe way home

And remember: Buzzed driving is impaired driving.

This campaign is about preventing crashes, protecting lives, and making sure everyone gets home safely.

Drive sober. Make a plan. Get home safe.
