June is LGBTQ+ Pride Month 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ June commemorates the Stonewall Rebellion in June 1969. This was a pivotal moment in the ongoing pursuit of equality, dignity, and civil rights for LGBTQ+ individuals. In Hayward, we affirm a simple principle: every resident deserves to be seen, respected, protected, and safe. Our community is strongest when every person has the opportunity to live authentically and participate fully in civic life. That commitment is reflected in our values and in policies such as Hayward’s Racial Equity Action Plan, adopted in 2020. We recognize that race, gender identity, sexual orientation, and other aspects of identity shape people’s experiences and opportunities. Building an inclusive city means understanding those experiences and ensuring that everyone feels they belong. A threat to the safety, dignity, or rights of one group is a threat to the well-being of our entire city. When we stand up for one another, we strengthen Hayward for everyone. This Pride Month, let us continue building a city where all people are welcomed, valued, and empowered to call Hayward home.

This is a very serious issue that deserves more attention. For many locally elected officials, aggressive social media posts do not remain online. They often lead to targeted harassment, menacing emails, coordinated bullying across multiple platforms, and, in some cases, threatening behavior in public.

Social media has become increasingly toxic, and what may begin as a comment or post quickly turns into a culture that normalizes intimidation, dehumanization, and hate. Over time, these behaviors can escalate and create real concerns for the safety and well-being of public servants and their families. What people don’t realize is that some folks out here have monetized this toxic behavior and they make money for themselves here.

This article examines the experiences of women and people of color in elected office. I personally know some of the elected officials featured, and the treatment they have endured is unacceptable. Too often, racist, offensive, and hateful rhetoric is dismissed as part of public life when, in reality, it can have profound personal and professional consequences.

Community engagement is important. Transparency is important. Accessibility to elected leaders is important. But there is a clear difference between constructive disagreement and behavior that is aggressive, racist, menacing, or intended to intimidate.

What many people do not see is the cumulative impact these attacks have on those who choose to serve their communities. This article highlights an issue that is all too real for many leaders, especially women and people of color in public service.

From convoys of truckers circling their neighborhoods to bombs left outside their homes, women experience both higher numbers and higher severities of threats than their male counterparts.

A good read about today’s election. Lengthy but very good.
