Tonight we had the privilege to honor Bob Shamro. Bob retired after nearly 30 years on the Town of Hayward Fire Dept. He rose up the ranks over the years, serving as Secretary, Assistant Chief and also as Chief. Bob is also a Fire Instructor with Northwood Technical College.
Thanks Bob for your years of dedication to making the THFD a well trained, well oiled machine.

Calls for the month of March.
March was again slower on the fire calls, but our EMR group has been busy.
Even though we aren't getting alot of calls, we still get together every Monday night to either do training, maintenance or a business meeting.
If you have interest in joining a great group of men and women on the THFD, stop by on any Monday evening and chat with us.

The end of an era. Today, we shipped out our old Engine 206, or Engine 2. This was the first enclosed-pump cab truck that the THFD had. We received it in 2000 from Darley in Chippewa Falls WI, and sold it in 2026.
This truck served us so well over the years and pumped ALOT of water..

We also sold our Brush truck. This was also a very solid piece of apparatus for many years. Serving as a brush truck and a water site truck.

February was a slower month for the Town of Hayward Fire Department as far as fire calls. Our EMR group, however, had a busy month.

We're going to try to update you all every month with our calls per month and YTD. Here are the January calls.

Late last year (2025) we took ownership of this (new to us) fire truck. The truck is a 2006 International, 4-wheel drive, 3 seat cab. The truck has a 500 gallon water tank and a 1000 gpm pump. Engine 3 will serve as a back up engine for all fire incidents, an off road brush truck, and also its the first apparatus out the doors on all vehicle accidents as it houses our extrication equipment.

2025 in review. While the THFD is not a full time department and we don't get as many calls per year as some other areas or full time departments, we do pride ourselves on our commitment to training and serving the Hayward area the best we can.

In 2025 we responded to 135 calls:

30 fires ( structure, wildland, chimney and mutal aid calls to other depts)
42 rescsue/ems calls (accidents, searches, lift assists)
48 canceled enroute/good intent calls (CO/Smoke alarms, assisting ems and other depts with calls)
15 hazardous condition calls (powerlines, gas spills)

We also had 3 members complete Entry Level Firefighter class, 4 members complete Firefighter 1 class, and 10 members complete the EMR class.
We have a very solid group of firefighters and we all work and train hard to respond in a professional manner when we get called.
We're proud to serve the Hayward area. Happy New Year to you all.

Here's to hoping you all have a great Christmas with family/friends/loved ones. Be safe and, don't take this personally, but we hope we don't see you on Christmas Day 😜

This afternoon, the THFD was called out to the Hayward Tree Nursery (DNR) for a fire that started in the pine cone dryer in the lower level. Crews found fire coming from the eaves and windows, the fire quickly made it to the upper level of the building and most of the contents upstairs were lost.
Thanks to Round Lake, Stone Lake and the City of Hayward fire departments for your help.

We have a banner that hangs on the fence near the firehall and its proven to be a rather low cost, low energy recruitment tool. A constant reminder for those that drive by that we are looking for more firefighters. For those of you that dont drive by our fire station on a regular basis, this is your reminder that We Are Looking For More Firefighters.

What is a firefighter? In some Fire Depts , a firefighter is someone that can do all of the tasks... and, while those firefighters are very valuable, they can't do it all, all of the time. Atleast not in the volunteer fire service. It takes a lot of different skill sets and types of people to keep a fire dept ready for the next call. And not everyone can do everything, but maybe they're really good at a specific thing, and they help fill that need in their fire dept. And even the best firefighters take vacation time occasionly or time off for other reasons. We're all human.. so it takes others to fill that gap while sometimes we just arent available to answer the call.

Could you be that person? Do you have a set of skills that might help us stay ready? Or maybe youre looking for a change in your life and are ready to try something new.

Message us if you are. Message us if you have questions. We'll do our best to point you in the right direction.
