Hazard Fire Department personnel are currently on the scene of a tree down, on power lines at Liberty Street. A primary line has been severed and some of City of Hazard residents and businesses have lost power. Please stay clear of the scene, if you live on Liberty Street a containment perimeter is in place of 50 feet from the downed lines.

Hazard Fire Department membership completed the Confined Space Rescue course this past weekend at Technician level, further strengthening our response to technical rescue calls. There are a plethora of instances where these high value skills could come in handy. Thank you SFRT and instructor Brandon Wagers for a great weekend of training.

Five of our firefighters will be attending this class at the Kentucky State Fire School. We are excited for this opportunity and it will only make our department stronger!

Are you looking to participate in something new and different at State Fire School? Have you registered for classes but looking to add another? Over the next several weeks, we will be featuring classes being held at State Fire School for the very first time, along with a few of our previous classes you may not have heard about but might find interesting to attend. These classes offer plenty of opportunities to increase your knowledge in different aspects of the fire service, and there are offerings for every level of firefighter.

First up is Class #111 – Inferno Ready: Tactical Firefighter Operations. Push beyond the classroom and into the heat with Inferno Ready, an action-packed firefighting course that builds combat-ready firefighters. Through high-intensity drills, live-fire based training, and scenario-based training, students will master personal protective equipment and don SCBA with speed and confidence, conduct coordinated vertical ventilation and forcible entry, deploy and operate ground ladders under pressure, perform systematic victim search and rapid removal, advance charged hose lines in confined, smoke-filled spaces, and execute engine company operations, pump panel control, and water supply tactics. By course end, students will have the practical skills, teamwork, and decision-making needed to operate safely and effectively on the fireground.

Lead Instructor Mike Felty is an adjunct instructor with SFRT District 15 and also serves as a Battalion Chief for Frankfort Fire Department. He brings extensive experience in live fire training operations to this course.

ATTENTION: Please refrain from driving across Highland Avenue. HFD crews are battling close proximity wildfires from Hall Street, all the way around the road to walkertown. Several vehicles have already been monitored moving through the area making laps presumably looking at these fires. At this time, the fire department needs to get in and out of Highland Ave as quick as possible to refill apparatus with water. Please seek an alternate route of travel if you can. Thank you.

Hazard Fire Department personnel worked from around 4:00 PM yesterday evening up until the very early hours of this morning to contain wildfires getting close to homes. Most of our immediate efforts have been in the Lothair/Christopher areas and our primary focus is to secure the perimeter around structures, residences and property. Units are currently redeployed to the ridge around Perry County Coal offices continuing to combat wildfires along with Kentucky Forestry Division.

Last night at the City of Hazards Commissioners meeting, Chief Robert Keith and the Hazard Fire Department was approved for two promotions of firefighters Tim Allen, and Rayven Ritchie from part time - to full time Firefighters. Both men began their first shifts yesterday with shift 1.

Firefighter Rayven Ritchie has been with us for several years now. He has responded to a plethora of calls with the department, offering his services as a volunteer/part time firefighter. Rayven has trained with us, he has worked with us, and received numerous technician and international level certifications with HFD. We are glad to finally add him to our full time roster.

Firefighter Tim Allen is a 2022 graduate of Perry Central High School. Tim honorably serves his country with the Kentucky National Guard as a 12 November Horizontal Construction Engineer out of the Hazard unit. Tim has volunteered with us for a few months now and has already earned his Kentucky Basic 1 FF certification, showing great drive and determination to train hard, and train constantly, to earn full certification and serve both his country, and city.

We are glad to announce both of these men as the newest full time firefighters with HFD. Congratulations to both of you.
